i'm thinking of applying for california letter for next match....is there any hopes in california with low scores...75 & 82....please advice. Is it worth trying?

  #2

You never know without trying.

My answer is definitely YES. I don't think CA is much more competitive than other states. The reason why less IMG apply to programs in CA is due to the visa issue (most programs don't sponsor visa) and the hassle of CA letter. Since we have all gone through so many hassles to get this point, who cares one more?

Scores is just one factor. Many other factors count as well. I have heard an old IMG from my home country with low 80s in both steps matched to UCLA IM last year. He had a great LOR from a famous faculty in MGH.

GL, drswapna. You could search some threads in this forum about CA letter. And you could also go to www.ca.gov for instructions.

Thankyou so much

How difficult is it to get the letter? I know it takes 6-9 mths but are there any other hassles to get it. Is there anything in particular they are looking for before giving that letter.

Anyone...please advice

yes, they are looking that your records are "complete" ie they are in the compliance with their requirement. If your records are deficient with something, you may need to provide additional documents or records of additional training ...

oh, also, they will ask for your social security number, and I am not sure what you do if you don't have it at the time...

"If your records are deficient with something, you may need to provide additional documents or records of additional training ... "

How do we do that ....can you elaborate on that please....Thankyou

After reviewing your file they will send you a ltter saying if your file complete or not, if not they tell you exactly what you have to provide to complete your file. And then, just find the documents they want - totally depend on you and your resoursfulness..

They do accept Tax ID numbers as well. Thats what I used. Also by "complete" they are referring to a required number of wks of clinical training you must have before you can qualify. This inculed 4 wks of family medicine and 4 wks of psychiatry in addition to the basic medicine and surgery rotations. If you fill out the forms very carefuly and send them all documents they need, it shouldn't take more than 3 months for you to get your letter.

When I sent in my application, I attached a note in there stating that I don't have a SSN yet, so I am putting in my Tax ID number and they said its OK, but once you have your SSN, you need to update them with that number.

This is the complete list of rotations required by the CA medical board:
A minimum of total 40 weeks of core clinical courses, including
eight weeks in surgery,
eight weeks in medicine,
six weeks in pediatrics,
six weeks in obstetrics and gynecology,
four weeks in family medicine, and
four weeks in psychiatry.
