A patient, who is 8 weeks pregnant, has been using a copper-containing intrauterine device. On vaginal examination, the string is seen. Which one of the following would be the most appropriate management of this patient

1) Remove the device immediately.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

2) Recommend therapeutic abortion.

3) Remove the device if signs of infection develop.

4) Cut the string high in the endocervix, allowing the device to retract as pregnancy develops.

5) Perform laparoscopy to rule out ectopic pregnancy.

wel i`d recommend option B , recommend therapeutic abortion if the pt is willing to do so becoz this is a contraceptive failure.....
2nd thing is if the pt wish to continue preg then option A is appro simply remove the device but then ectopic preg has to be ruled out not with laparoscopy but usg

As the string is visible, and she IS PREGNANT--> REMOVING THE IUD...is the best option..
