susan,22 yrs old female, who recently moved from her family's home in another state, is hospitalized for attempting suicide by taking an overdose of antidepressant medications. On the third day of her hospital stay, she insists, under threat of a lawsuit, that her medications be stopped and that she be discharged from the hospital so she "can go home and finish the job." Her sensorium is clear. Her physician should

(A) discharge her against medical advice (AMA)
(B) honor her request and release her immediately
(C) obtain an emergency order of detention
(D) release her to go back to her parents' home
(E) sedate her

choice E
i am assuming by 'finishing the job', she means to go commit suicide so she is a threat to herself and shouldnt be released as other choices dont seem to go with this so i chose E :?:

then a or c, dont know the logic, explain

  #5

choice C is the logical answer. it is apparent that it is NOT a life-threatening emergency like status epilepticsu or Organosphosphorous poisoning where,if you dont intervene patient will die in few minutes.so, obtaining a court order which CAN BE OBTAINED IN A MATTER OF FEW HOURS is the correct answer. this is from famous K commercial review q book.

you can go to court when:-
1) they are a threat to themselves or others
2) parents refuse life saving treatment for a kid

According to my knowledge the length a pt can be held for txs is in the range of 72 hours. so after third day I should let her go. My answer is A.
