I am a very old IMG, 38yr, graduated in 1990. Did my PhD and residency in IM in my home country. 5 yrs of postdoc. research in a North American University with some publications, followed by ~5yrs working in a American scientific information agency. The current job is stable and light but boring. I am considering resume my medical career here, but worrying that the chance may be too slim, if not zero. Please help me to make a decision: do I have ANY hope? I am wondering my old age+long time away from clinica may shut every door before me.

You advice will be greatly appreciated.

It is not very old for this country.
Just not very young.

If you will take this tests, do residency ets,

there is always a chance

Hello Whirlsand
I was older than you when I started studying and an older graduate as well. I did both the USMLE's and the Canadianin MCC's. This year I matched in Canada in the specialty of my choice and out of my 3 interviews in the US was offered a prematch in 1.
My scores were 82 and 90; average Canadian scores also, needed visa( am Canadian citizen), no US publications. So you see you're way ahead of where I started already.
Just take a deep breath and start studying. When we're older, we approach the exams better, we interview well, we have the ADVANTAGe of life's experiences - it pays off.
Good Luck!

Hi, Cordmd

I'm 38 too, living in Canada and trying to obtain a residency position.

Which specialty could obtain you in Canada?? Have you done this by CARMS??

Thanks

Cora

Hi there:

I am a very old IMG as well, currently doing internship in LA. Had the same thought process as you mentioned.

Go for it if medicine has always been your choice, you did not do it just because the circumstance. I am definately not regretting my choice.

I will be cheering onnod

Hi
I am an older IMG considering to start studying from now.I dont think things could be that bad if not that easy.
At this age we have other responsibilities which keep us haunting us.
BUT i mean if your circumstances allow you MUST do it.
