22 years old mathew is brought to emergency room in an unconscious state. he was badly injured , with blood pouring out of his left radial artery and with muscles and nerves around lacerated. while you are about to treat the patient, suddenly patient comes to CONSCIOUSNESS and tells calmly, doc, i dont want to liveany longer, i did this to myself, i dont want any treatment, let me out of here..........., how to proceed. a.honour his wish,as patient is apparently competent b.proceed with treatment ,as patient is clearly incompetent c.appeal to ethics committee d.try pursuade him to give consent e.proceed only after getting written consent. f.obtain his parents permission

though it breaks my heart, I think the correct answer might be 'a'. The patient's competency is to proved only by court not by doctors. We have to assume he is competent. Though it sounds morally wrong, I think we are to honour his wish.

congrats losergirl, sorry meg,you got this wrong!. there is a clear evidence of incompetence on the part of the patient, that he is committing suicide, andthat makes him incompetent, there is no ambiguity here. go ahead with the treatment.your statement that courts decide competence is true though.
