We go to these interviews , so many people fighting for one spot . Sometimes I come from an interview upset , altough , everythig went ok , but , as everybody says, you never know it. The matter is not to get a sopt , but where to get a spot .
I don't know if it just me , but I am feeling anxious , stressed with match and prematch decisions .
But anyway , I just wanted to share my feelings , maybe someone is feeling the same way .

Happy 2007 and Good Luck to all of us!!!

I know exactly what you mean. I've even been having dreams/nightmares about the match. It is such a hard decision to make...taking a prematch or going for the match. Don't feel alone...i'm sure there's more out there who feel the same way.

  #3

we are all in the same boat. just that some people share their insecurities and other keep mum. hopefully all will be well.

  #4

you are not alone. same anxiety over here. good luck. ngt.

Well, my feelings are a little bit different. I will attend all my interviews in Jan. They are quite few (5). I havent been able to prep yet coz I'm overwhelmed with job in this period. I'll start tomorrow dec 30th.

I dont really feel anxiety coz although all the sacrifice for this match process (time, energy and money), I already have a good job and I love where I live now. So why did I do this match thing? I dont know. maybe because we always aim to the best and we always think that america is the best place in the world. But I'm not sure of that. I will try this experience. If I match, fine, I move to the US with my family. If I dont, Fine. I will still be happy, my wife will still be happy and all my friends will celebrate that I dont move. If I enter a program and then It does not meet my expectation, leave will always be an option. The fact is America is not my last option as I already have a job and a great life here. I can quit for one month or one year and come back again, they will still take me. This fact kills anxiety...

great attitude wamba

  #7

I forgot the last one: if my wife is not happy about America, I will leave.

Winners never quit, Quitters never win...all we can do is do our best...the rest is up to god! God bless us all and good luck!

I agree with what Nisha said. But looks like that is not enough these days. However hard you work there is something you MUST have: LUCK and CONNECTIONS inorder to get what you need that is residency of course. I never thought I would say this but I have seen first hand that all these factors are very important.

I just wanted to emphasise the importance of these factors not to annoy anyone using capslock

Happy and Prosperous New Year everyone and good luck

The golden goal in life is not to win but to be happy. You can win without being happy and you can quit and be happy... smiling face

Happy new year to everybody

i get the post iview crash everytime. u can only ustand it if u listen to "turn the page" by gods of metal

Whoa-oh
Out there in the spotlight, you're a million miles away
Every ounce of energy, you try and give away
As the sweat pours out your body, like the music that you play

Later in the evenin' as you lie awake in bed
With the echoes of the amplifiers ringin' in your head
You smoke the day's last cigarette
Rememberin' what the PD said
What the PD said

(Yeah, what she said.)

Yeah
Here I am, on the road again
There I am, up on the stage
Here I go, playn' star again
There I go, turn the page

for those about to rock - we salute usmiling face

I have been in your spot Vic2006, I think if I didn't get the prematch I would have got an ulcer. unlike wamba I had to burn my ships. it was either to stay home or to ditch my residency there and go for the states, it was a risk and I passed. yet I am still have these worries because I didn't get CS score yet so the position is not that secure.

But here is the thing, here in the states it is not that relevant where do you get your position. a pgy3 resident told me that every accreditied program is -by definition- a good program, it is up to you what you will learn and how are you going to achive your goals.

some guys are hooked on going to university programs. but these though prestigious. has many cons. in fact you may consier a program to be bad and then it turns out it is better than your dream program. I went to what I considered a very bad program but one of the resients -from my country- told me that he has a friend in a great univ program, but he is not as happy and didn't get the chances that was available at that program.

in fact every time I spoke to a resident here. they just say same, it is your effort is what is going to make you not the program you go through

I hope you find peace of heart. I wish all of you the best of luck

Hello Mohelgamal,

Thank you for your words .I agree with you . I would be happy with afillited programs . For FMG opportunities are much more difficult to get in Programs where the predominance is AMG . My only problem is a family problem , I have a baby to raise , my partner is reluctant to move and the only Program in my city is a University Program ,very competitive. Altough my scores are high 90/99, no visa need , it is difficult ,and a lot of pressure on me to "try" and see what happens in the MATCH . So I really have prefered not to have gotten a prematch offer , but I got 2 so far , one of them not bad at all . AND inside me , i am confused .
But thanks for your words and Good Luck to you.

Great words Mohelgamal! The outlook from an inside point of view is always different. You are right when you say that many prestigious programs might not meet our requirements as some "bad program" might do. I think everything depends on what you are looking for. Some colleagues are looking for the name and they have good reasons because if you graduate at Harvard or John Hopkins, you will always be respected though you're residency was a mess. But If you are simply looking for a great training, then you might find many "bad program" providing really great trainings. I personally belong to the second group. I have 5 iv. 2 from uni prog (1 from Mayo) and 3 from uni affiliated. I give all of them the same chance. everything will depends on my feeling during the interview. like when you date a woman. you cant just marry her because they told you her name was Naomi Campbell. You have to date her, eat with her, talk to her, listen to her, and sense the feelings that pervade you after that. Then you can decide...

Vic2006, I understand you as we are in the same boat (an infant to raise and a wife). An advice: sometimes, confusion is related to fact that someone does not make a decision. you have 2 prematches offers. Well, take 3 days to think about the offers, take a decision and stick on it. You will see, your confusion will die.

Did u guys hear ... Synergy, Saginaw Program Director got seriously reprimanded for biased conduct recently. She is South Indian and was complained by internal sources of promoting only south indians in the program. Word on street is that this year she will have hard time accomodating her family members and south indians will no more enjoy safe heaven at Saginaw IM program! ... I am completly devastated to hear this.

My 2 cents:

1. Community or community affiliated is NOT a synonim of bad program. that is simply not correct.

2. The perception that the residency at the most prestigous institutions is a mess and the residents are unhappy there is also far from true.

3. The ideal recipe for unhappiness is rank a program that is not a good fit. The game is about fit between applicants and programs.

4. I could not agree more that the main factor in the amount of learning is the effort you put in ANY program.

Personally, I have not seen happier residents than at Tufts-NEMC. The best working atmosphere I have ever seen.

Good luck to all and happy new year,

ngt.

  #19

personally i wud prefer to be unhappy for 3yrs and then bag the fship of my choice. than be happy for 3yrs and then be unhappy for life bcoz i didnt get my choice fship. and unfortunately the name of the institution is a big big deal nowadays.

sorry for playing the devils advocate.

I will rob the happiness of my residency program for 3 years ..Then I will plunder the prosperity and name of a fellowship program for another 2-3 years....After that there will be a civil war to abolish slavery in my program and my state. Then we will meet on this forum again and discuss how to get into a residency again.

Disclaimer-no disgrace intended.

I think name of the institution helps a lot , open doors , but if you are not good , if you don't have charisma and if you do not know how to grab the opportunities you will be the same thing in Harvard or in the worst hospital in the US.
I believe we all are interviewing in different types of hospitals . I think the training will be basically the same , nobody in residency in anywhere will embrace you , will take your hands and teach you everything . I think you will be the main actor in the play , not the Program will be the big actor . But certainly if you are in a hospital with better resources , with attendings that are there to teach and not just to have the work done , a great teaching support ,easier access to research , your life will be easier and residency will be more stimulating . But you can learn , you can do research , you can do whatever in the worst hospital , but you will spend much more energy and you will need to have to open the doors with more difficulty .

"if you don't have charisma and if you do not know how to grab the opportunities you will be the same thing in Harvard or in the worst hospital in the US."

the worst resident at harvard gets more fship opportunities than the best in most comm progs. this is as the pd will push. ur reco letters are from top names in the field. no program will say "this guy is bad and we suggest u dont take him". every pd wants to see his grads get into cards / gi at top places so that they can boast about it and entice future applicants. and every pd of a fship program wants some1 from harvard on his roster than from some xyz program. its like havin a trophy wifewink

yes no program is dead end. but i am feeling first hand what it feels to fight with the handicap of being an img for a residency. dont want to face the even greater handicap of fightin for a top fship being an img from an unknown place.

cmon man im growin old. i noticed 2 grey hairs on my head at the tender age of 24 with slight receding of my hair line. i have to get married in the future, and these feministic modern age intellectual women are particular about hair. make life easier for ourselves - get into a good program now than fight again another daysmiling face
