The following was just received regarding an applicants personal statement:
----------------------------------------------------

We wish to bring to your attention the following facts related to the residency application of the person named above:

A program contacted ERAS to report that the personal statement submitted by the above applicant contained text found in a sample personal statement located on the website:

http://webcampus.drexelmed.edu/osa/careeradvising....

Our investigation revealed the applicant had in fact used a personal statement from the Web site referenced.

Dr. ___________ was contacted for a response to the allegation. Her response is enclosed for your review.

This memorandum is being sent to legitimately interested parties. ERAS makes no judgment as to the culpability of any person with respect to matters reported and does not assess the suitability of an individual to study or practice medicine. Rather, ERAS strives to communicate complete and accurate information to the parties involved in the residency application process. Evaluation of this information is the responsibility of the recipient of the report.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Just to let applicants through ERAS know that some programs are really looking close at the personal statements. It's okay to borrow items, but not to copy a personal statement, LORs, Deans Letters, etc.

Awwww, then what happen with that applicant?

  #5

well i think if they are catching personal statements they should also at least confirm the lor's as i am sure there are people with fake lor's too. it should be even for everyone not just that somebody had the bad luck to get caught suffers alone.

  #6

anyway i hope he gets out of this mess and learns from it

  #7

that is really sad. Well i still hope he/she gets the lesson & come out of the mess.

I really dont understand why some one would copy and paste. Its supposed to reflect your self...and if you copy and paste thats being dishonest to yourself.I got to know so many things about myself trying to think what to write in a SOP.Helped organise my priorities.Feel sorry for the guy.

honesty is great because it brings you to heaven, which belongs to life after life. But cheating is part of everyday life. Cheaters are among us, they are numerous and they always talk about honesty. they could write books or hold conferences about the virtue of honesty and their contempt to cheating. But they are cheaters. they are so numerous that cheating could be considered normal, if normality is related to the % of the population that does something.

To me, most of the applicants (me included) are cheaters because they need a preparation. what is this prep about? they visit this website and steal the tips from older applicants. they read FA for the match, Iserson, etc., which determine what to do, what not to do, what to say, what not to say, how to behave, how to write, how to speak, etc. We all learn to become actors and we present ourselves in a way that is not exactly the real one. Does this belong to honesty with the big H? or to the cheating world? Many of us read their lors and then waived their right to see them. many others just got the lors written by friends and some others just got fake ones. Cheaters are numerous and programs know that. The clue here is not being a cheater but being a good cheater; being a great cheater. Because programs are looking for the best cheaters to give them a position and for bad cheaters for exclusion. And our poor friend they caught was a really bad cheater.

I think many of us take some tips or ideas of past applicants or books, but you MUST add your creative factor and of course not to copy/paste it. it's only to give you an idea and that`s it.

regarding this guy: bad luck and sad. he learned the lesson well, but maybe he didn't have any problem in other hospitals with his PS. I hope so because even if he copied exactly a PS from a website, it's not fair he loses his chance to match only because of that, that's not fair. He should have the chance to change his PS or something.

The applicant is given a chance to explain to ERAS and the programs why it was copied, and to change their PS. They are still allowed to participate through ERAS and the match.

I am just bumping this on the front page, so that 2008 match appplying students should take this into consideration when writing PS..

common sense, as they say, is very uncommon....another thing i'd like to say here is, avoid reading anyone else's PS before u start writing ur own. Go over a few samples on internet...but not some seniors PS...words, lines creep in from what u read and can really create a block...i had a friend who i allowed to see my PS (he isnt the type to copy paste) and he sent me his PS when he wrote it...i noted at least 4 instances where he sounded exactly like me!! had to redo his PS for him to make sure we sounded different (we were applying to the same programs)....never showed my PS to anyone else in the application race after that

Though this is a bit off topic, they also verify LoRs.. I was recently told by one of the professors at my med school, that he had received an e-mail from ECFMG asking him to verify if he had actually written an LoR for some person. And he hadnt!! shocked He was mighty pissed.. And he said that he had had a talk with the principal about it and he was gonna let the ECFMG know..!!
