All of You have always been very helpful. Please clarify one thing: you told me on one of the psots that i can apply for cat IM macth after prelim Im. 2 questions: does it put me in any good shoes for matching at University programs. I have heard that 1st yr of training cant be repeated. Is that true for j1 visa only? (i m a US citizen). thanking you in anticipation and looking forward to ur reply

Hi new2usmle, Sorry I dont' understand why you want to repeat intern year after you finish prelim IM. Basicly prelim year equals to PGY-1 in cat IM. Why not apply for PGY2 directly since there are tons of positions available? Is this because of visa issue?

I think you definitely can if you have to. The intern experience will be a merit for your application. What programs don't like a person who already had one year IM experience in US?! But I have to say again that PGY-2 positions in IM are a lot. I have seen many people transffered from a not-so-good program to a much better one starting PGY-2. It is good PGY-2 postions are not in a Match system. Honestly, do you want to go through the whole process of application and Match again? Anyway, to be safe, you can also apply for PGY-1 Cat Im and PGY-2 at the same time, of course to different programs. Just be aware that PGY-2 positions are not so hard to get. GL!

As I know, there are some website (e.g. CareerMD.com) which may post some PGY2 postions here and there, but they are way outdated. I also remember there is an 1-800 nubmer to call, but sorry I don't rember. The bottomline is most programs don't bother posting at all. So you need to ask around, just like we did for our residency application in the past fall. It is a lot of work, but it is well worth it.
