Guys, I have a question abour primary care. I know that primary care mainly involves ambulatory/out patient medicine. So how does completing your training in a primary care program impact your chances of going for fellowship later on? Is it possible or does a primary care program mean a fullstop to your fellowship ambitions? Also, is it wise to talk about fellowships in a primary care prog iv? btw...Happy holidays to all!

its tough to get a fellowship. I went to one interview in a primary care program. 50% of their residents got into fellowship. I told them i want to do a fellowship. It depends on the field i guess. less competitive u can always say. but tough fellowships like GI/Cards just leave them....

Thanks dev for the answer. 50% residents going on for fellowships doesnt sound to be a very bad figure: in fact, most of the places I have been to have this number as the avergae any year. Tough fellowships are out, eh? Sounds sad. BTW, my primary care iv is at Staten Island Univ Hospital. I read a couple of reviews on scutwork.com and they all basically said that the place is horrible. I dont know how much to believe these reviews. Did you interview there? If yes, whats your opinion about the program? Anybody else with iv experience for primary care? Thanks!

That's true. When I asked the program director do they have any board review courses, he said as a resident, you are supposed to study by yourself w/o help from others. I felf bad and asked what is the passing rate? guess what, supppper low. Unorganized interview, bad experience Good luck and happy holidays to all

I dont know much about this program (Staten Island) in particular, but I do know that scutwork sometimes confuses more that helping out...and in any case, remember that any review is subject to a personal bias...so try to identify the objective points in the review and ignore things like "the attendings are bad"...etc... Having said that, well. primary care seems to be a gamble. I dont know how favorable/unfavourable it is for pursuing a fellowship later on...but it does sound like a dead end!
