I recieved a prematch from a great place in IM and i have accepted it. Frankly i am not even sure how i got it unless its a miracle.
I have scores in mid 90's, 5 yrs from graduation and a US citizen with no USCE or any other clinical experience whatsoever.
I am good theoretically but with no practical experience i am a little worried. I was asked some clinical questions and scenarios during the
interview which i answered probably okay. But after graduating from medical school, i haven't done anything (not even housejob).I haven't done any prcedures
like passing NG tube or foley's catheter or arterial blood draw etc. Can anyone advice me how to better prepare myself prior to starting residency?
Also what are the other things that i need to do? My friends tell me everyone is just like me when they graduate from med school but they do fine in residency but i want to make sure everything goes right.

To become a doctor in USA, i studied the last one n half year like crazy, it is a dream come true to finally land a job, but i am afraid now.
Any advices?

Also i was thinking about asking for an observership at the same hospital, but then it will expose my weakness? Any thoughts?

hey chemamr thanks for the reply.
I wish i was in my home country. it would have been so easy to get hands on clinical experience there but i am in US.
I am looking for some contacts probably shadowing someone but so far i am unable to find any oppurtunity. I was also going thru some websites to better understand the daily responsibilities and expectations from an intern.
Any seniors who are already doing their residency please reply!
Thankyou

hi, i am not doing residency but I did one in my home country. my 2 cents:

1. dont learn procedures, the time to learn and master them is residency, not before.

2. you are expected to do h and ps and write medicals histories effectively. propose a work-up and a plan. communication with patients and colleagues is key. well-presenting patient in rounds comes with time, but practicing that will be important. have some idea how to describe an ekg and cxr. learn some acronyms, as they are used very frequently.

Recomm: buy this book to understand what is required from 3rd and 4 th year med students and go do an observership/externship at the place you match, just start it in march or later. they will treat you well and you'll do fine. just work your butt out and people will recognize your efforts. you are not expected to be an attending. relax and congratulations. good luck and happy holidays.

Thankyou guys all of u and this forum has been really helpful for me...i took a note of that book Fundamentals of Clinical Medicine, 4th Edition
An Introductory Manual

and will try to find it.
Also if you guys have any other book advice that i should know plz tell me.
As far as history and PE goes as well as diagnosing and planning a work up , i am confident. But its just the practical and technical hands on part that makes me jittery.
I have no friends doing first year residency anywhere otherwise i would have eaten their brains out! lol about their daily schedule and things that they need to know...But anyway...i know some of u will be thinking "what a moron" and sucha whinny about me...well i am sorry..Wish all of you goodluck and plz keep in touch
