Hi ,if i take surg prelim , which is the next match i can apply for ,is it 2008 match or 2009 match???cause i will join surg prelim only in july 2007(if i take this oppurtunity) and september the application starts and will i be able to participate in the 2008 match???

u will b reapplying in sept again of 2007 for a positon starting from july 2008 which is when ur current prelim wud end.

thank u so much mohelgamal , i appreciate that , my credentials arent good ,and i dont have much options to chose , left with very few and now i need to know more abt this before i step in .....i dont mind working hard during surg prelim.......all the surg prelim guys who are doing surg prelim dont get in surg categorical , thats what i understood as far i spoke to others ,then where do they go , what do they do???is that the deadend????

man i believe i explained this to u on another forum too. u CAN do fp/im/ob/radio/aneas. or worst comes to worst do another yr of surg prelim.

Dear Baseball.
Aside from visa Issues. I was speaking to a couple of residents and I even directly ASked PDs about this. after one year of Prelim you can apply to categorical and repeat the PGY1 Again. but the trick is visa issues. most propably you will not be able to repeat the PGY1 in the same specialty except if you have a GC or citizen (like me).
Sorry I can't help you with the visa issues. check the website and call ECFMG directly. or better contact someone who is in prelim surgery on the same visa you want . please note that J1 is sponsored by ECFMG and NOT the hospital but ECFMG need you to be accepted in a residency before they sponsor you.

hi doc_doc_apurva ,
thanks for ur information , but when i spoke to a guy who is doing his surg prelim , he has totally confused me now,that i cant do IM after surg prelim and i have to leave to my country if i dont get surg categorical PGY2,thats y i had to post here ,sorry.

Guess what apurva meant was that there is no rule which forbids you from doing IM after a surgery prelim..
However, how easy/diffiuclt it might be to get an IM position next year is an open ended statement currently...true, you will have 1 year of authentic US CE..but how will you explain to program directors that you now think that IM is the thing for you (can be done, but you have to be convincing...you dont wanna sound as a shallow person who took up surgery prelim just as a filler...)

Hi baseball,
even i heard that u can do IM/FM/Ped after surgery preliminary,i think that is a good option ,take others suggestion, weigh the risks and benefit and then chose it.....

I met a resident myself, from surgery prelim in uni affiliated then enter IM categorical at Uni program. So it's possible.

Dear Baseball,
I think you should contact ECFMG directly as I suggested before may be they have a clear answer about the visa issue, have you done that? technincally ECFMG is the one who give you the visa

i havent contacted ECFMG , i will contact them on monday ....i heard visa issues are very tough in prelim surg especially being an img.......all the best mohelgamal
