Robin,
Thanks for taking the time to help me out....

The question is as follows...... If a patient survives 2 years after the operation, which of the following is the probability of surviving at least 4 years?

Are they independent events?

I think it may be condional probability, look probability theory and you may finr your answer under conditional probability.

answer is C =0.85*0.84

at least 4 years is different from next 4 years.

Robin,
Thanks for the help.....but could you possibly show me how you derived the answer? I was thinking D because they are indpendent events? Thanks.

I really didnt notice the change in the question, robin is right , I had been trying to calculate thinking it was the next 4 years which made me think there was something wrong with the problem. .84 is the probabilty of survining the 3rd year given he survied the second. .85 is the probablity of him surviving the 4th year given he survived the 3. Now you multiply the values .85 *.84 and you get the probability
C
