hi there,

while am studying cardiovascular pharma:

it states that flecainide as class 1c antiarrythmic act as a pure na channel blocker that would act on phase 0 in fast response tissue..which should decrease the action potential duration indeed because it augment the fast na current

howver in kaplan notes 2007..it sates that it has no effect on the action potential duration...does any 1 have an explanation to this?

here is your answer, remember that while class 1b antiarrymic block the slow na current, decreasing apd this one has no effect on the NA window current. Look under 1b and you will se what i'm talking about . Finally class 1a also blocks a little k + so they prolong action potential duration. I dont thing you should worry to much about them however, flecainamide and encainamide are used often due to the risk of sudden cardiac death when treating patients after mi, that seems most important. Remember no blockage of NA window current= no change in action potential duration .
