Qn. Does strep Pyogenes cause food poisoning? Staph aureus for a definite fact does, but I have a group of cuckoos insisting that strep pyogenes can cause food poisoning but it is uncommon. Can anybody confirm this?

I've worked in microbiology over 30 years and have never heard of it causing food poisoning. However, this bug is not one to mess with clinically. It can cause necrotizing fasciitis besides strep throats. Whenever we isolate it, we must call it to the floor if it's an in-house patient. Any invasive S. pyogenes (blood cultures) get sent to the state health department for further grouping.

The toxins from Staph. aureus are what causes the food poisoning.

Tell your cuckoos to show you a source in writing. I found nothing on this CDC page to indicate a food poisoning issue with this bug:

Work gave me a headache last night. I was inundated with the work you docs sent on Thursday and Friday. Yikes! I had a load of anaerobic workups and ID's, over 75 urine cultures to look through, and about 20 positive blood cultures to deal with. I barely made it out on time.

Thing is, we can go home and forget about it until the next time we work. You guys will be tethered to a beeper forever. My hat goes off to YOU :-).
