I am starting for STEP 1 prep after 10+ years and want to know if it's possible to do it and if anyone here interested in making such a group with study and full time job to attempt in the next 6-8 month.

Good luck to everyone.

Nadeem

Hi Nadeem

Yes it is certainly possible. I am also 10+ and there are many fathers and mothers like us who are doing it. In US they don't see the age much rather your scores and motivation. So carry on. You can join a study group in USMLE STEP1 STUDY PARTNER section of this forum with STUDY PARTNER FOR STEP 1 (The one which most reads and pages around 50+ now). You will find many friends there.

BTW From where did you do graduation and in which year? I have a friend with similar name.

Hi Marita

Its not a disadvantage at all. There are many nice people there and you are more than welcome in that group. Recently few other people also joined. So try it, it will help you a lot. I am trying for July.

Hi!!

I guess we're all in the same boat. But i hear all this about 10+ grads not getting residency and it drives me nuts. I can't change my graduation date but it really brings my hopes down. I heard that they might not even consider older grads for USMLE soon. Is this rumor true?

How do we deal with that?

  #9

Dear Shbn

This is all rumor. Don't listen to it and carry on. You can read various posts on this forum you will find that there are many many seniors doing it. They don't discriminate on age, sex, race, religion. If its not easy its not impossible too.

I'm an old grad Class 89. That's right 17 years agonod. I took step 1 last April, 2006 and scored 99/256. I'm back on the forum only recently because just finished step 2 ck. Passed as per OASIS but still waiting for results.

It is possible to score high, even very old IMG like us. So study hard. If you want some info on how I did it, look up my old series of post on how to prepare for Step 1. You can find it by clicking my name, look for my posts under " what to do?"

Good luck to everyone, don't under-estimate your own capability.

People can't seem to find the post, so adding it here.

You cannot do anything about your graduation year or how you've lived your life since then, because they're the past. The only thing you can do something about is your future. The USMLE exam is your future. How well you do there depends on your determination and how hard you are willing to work to get a top notch score. As an old graduate who needs visa, you need to score above 90's to have a good chance at getting a residency position. The higher the better. The average IMG candidate for 2007 match is a fresh graduate, with scores in mid to high 80's, with some USCE and USLORs. You have to beat that since like me you are an old grad. Most fresh grads do not have Step 3 when they apply. Good performance in Step 3 also helps especially for Old Grads. Also applying with all steps cleared and ECFMG certified will help.

To nonia: you're welcome. to understand in more detail about step 1, read my post in what to do. A link is in this thread somewhere.

To Nooran: Start studying to learn and understand and keep the memorizing and mastering til later. As an old grad, we have lots of concepts to learn and relearn. Only then can we master those topics which is what's needed to do well in USMLE. Don't even schedule your exam until you've finished the learning process. Since as old grad it's been a long time since we've read or reviewed for something and we may not be able to accurately gauge our review speed. However, do set a schedule and goals to be met by a certain time or else it can take years before you actually become prepared to take the Steps. It's so easy to procrastinate and I've been there. Yet I still did very well in the end.

Hey Guys,

I am a old grad too. Passed MBBS in 1987. I am due to take the step 1 on March 5th. I worked hard at the prep . But now it seems like I have not retained any thing. Like a slate wiped clean. I am going to go through the exam anyway. Lets see what happens.shaking head
