I have been used a black suit to go to 2 interviews. in the second one the Pd asked me why am I wearing such a black suit.

I then asked an american lady I know about wearing a black suit to interviews and her facial expression was like this smileyshocked

she told me that no one here were such suits except for funerals ( and wedding tuxedo) but for interviews I should wear a dark brown or a navy blue suit (even though they look very similar to black) . she also was not satisfied with my choice of a gray tie and she told me to go to a store and ask the clerk to select something for me.

another person said that this is a fatal mistake and show that I am not americanized enough

I realized that many imgs were wearing the same color combination I used. so is it that big deal??? please help do I need to buy a new suit before my next interview

I think that is completely false. I have gone to several interviews so far and at least 50% of the interviewers (both americans and IMGs) were wearing black suits.

Take it easy and prepare for you interview.

Good luck

This is surely not a fatal error but I dont think its a lucky choice. black suits (esp. if put together with white shirt and gray tie) are related to funerals or anyway to bad events. That is, if you wear them you automatically give the image of a sad person person which is not in your interest.

Remember, these people do not know you deeply and staying with them half a day will not satisfy this purpose. Therefore, the idea they have about you is 90% appearance and 10% yourself. And the way you dress is an important part of it.

in fact I did wear a black suite( and dull not shiny black) , a white shirt and a gray tie. sad .esp that many people tell me that I had a sad look in my eyes. even without this suit. may be the will pity me and giv me the postition to cheer me upgrin

Black is boring and predictable. Grey is a nicer choice.

I wore grey for most of them, but when I switched to black, I fit in better with 90% of other candidates, all wearing black. smiling face

navy blue suit, red/maroon tie. It's the best combination.. it's even in Iserson's. I couldn't understand why everyone else in the crowd would have black, grey, a pink suit in one interview.

navy blue and red/maroon tie with a white shirt. Everything else is second. and why in god's name does wearing the same as everyone else make it okay?

In the grand scheme of things... if your 99/99/2006 with 12 publications.. you could come in wearing swimming trunks and get a prematch... for the rest of us mortals... every little detail is important.

As for AMG's wearing black suits... GOOD, your navy blue suit will make you look better than the AMG trying to wear the same thing he wore at his sister's wedding.. and he's AMG.. he's gonna match anyway.. they really dont have to care about these "Details". The only thing they are thinking about during the interview is "I hope I don't match here, it would be embarrasing if I had to go to #7 on my list"...

Hi, bbb.
IF: Black is boring and predictable. Grey is a nicer choice. (for a man)
Do you think a pure black suit will fit a female interviewee?
Thanks!

IF you are going to wear black, Deepa - personalize it with a color blouse that looks great - a nice jewel tone would look great.

For a girl, if you're wearing a shirt, does the collar go inside the coat like guys or does it stay on the outside of the coat's collar? I tried both ways and I think outside looks a little too informal. Any thoughts?

  #14

Something like the collar in or out isn't going to matter. That's a small thing.

bbb, thank you very much.
Can I wear a Christmas-red silk shirt next week?
I appreciate your suggestions!

I wore a skirt suit which was not black--mine is sort of grey and looks a lil different and I was the only one dressed a lil different in ALL my interviews. Most interviewees wore black and the AMGs teamed it with nice bright silk camis/blouse. I really dunno whether it is good to look a lil different. I am now thinking of switching to my boring charcoal grey pant suit. Should I switch or be bold and look different?? bbb..others... help!!

Hi there,

Interesting thread. I was done with my first interview last week. I wore a navy pant suit with blue shirt. All the other three wore black with white combo. I think, the main issue here is being comfortable and wearing something that suits u well at the same time a bit conservative. Another thing I noticed is that two guys who came to the interview had nothing in their hands-no portfolio, no attache case nothing. I dont know whether its a good idea coming like that.

Did not notice that I got promoted as Forum Elite. nodgrin. Interesting!!!!!!

  #20

hey.. since we're in the topic of dressing.. how about dinners? will you wear the same suit that you plan to wore during the interview?

  #21

you plan to wear i mean

  #22

dear BBB and gang.....
is it ok to wear a dark brown suit and skirt with a pale yellow blouse to IVs especially in the northern cold parts of the country..or should I stick to light grey pant suit.....sorry for the vain question...thanks

  #23

madmadmadmadYou made that a fasion thread. By the way I am a man.madmadmadmad

But any way thanks for the advices, smiling face , for the record I decided to wear the black suit for the next interview.

As for the dinner, (Speaking about men here). I asked the Program coordinator and she said that it was an informal dinner. yet I wear the black suit, a gray shirt with no tie.

Dear BBB thank you for your great Posts in this forum you are really helpful , I think that (again for men) looking boring is better than looking strange.

as for kykie
I studied step1 from kaplan books (red them one time) then did usmle world (every question and studied the answers). then took the 4 nbme exam and searched for the question answer here in the forum and in books, I also did a couple of exams from step1 kaplan qbook . all that took me about 3 month. my real exam was more clinically oriented than nbme or usmleworld question.

I was in a hurry to take the exam so I can apply this year and needed my scores early. so I would have studied more ( although I did well thanks GOD. but I think I was some what lucky). for the record I was very good at basic sciences in med school esp anatomy and physio . so I heavily depended on what I remember. I don't know what is your case.

you can check my step1 experience, If you have further question please send me a Personal message I will be glad to helpsmiling face

No I didn't use kaplan DVDs for step1 (I did for most of step2 ck) . I read kaplan fast. the truth is I skipped most of anatomy and physio ( except neuro). As I said before, I relied on my good knowledge base I acquired through med school, our basic science curriculum was a killer. it was all in English and way more extensive than USMLE requirment (except that we didn't do much genetics and biostatistics).

Biostatistics, medical ethics and most of psychiatry is exactly the same questions as in step 2, even in kaplan books many chapters are identical, you don't need to memorize DSM/IV but you need to read it and understand it

Also step 2 prep should help you with most of Path and Pharm (esp side effects of drugs). in fact I personally studied path and pharm before step 2 and didn't review them before step 1.

my biggest problem was remembering biochemistry, and microbiology. you need to memorize the charts for bacteria and viruses. they are very important.

The most important Tip is do lots of Questions, I heard before I started preparing for the usmle that you can only study the questions and get 99. this may be true depending on your med school knowledge.

the second most important tip is that great scores are good . but not everything. try to do any research or work in your country or here try to do any publication including writing in your country mention everything you did no matter how small , get LORs from your country until you get some american . what I have found that an applicant with 90-95 score with LORs. and a couple of publication or research is better than 99 applicant with none. even though all has a chance
