below is an excerpt from a PM i sent to an IM applicant. please read it before going into IM. Although it may sound anti-IM, i do believe IM is important. however i feel it has a high rate of disinterest since many IMGs believe it is the only speciality in medicine. here it is: btw, r u sure u wanna do IM. do u like IM or is it because u dont know what else to go into. if u r doing it to get into cards or ge then go to a place that offers those fellowships. otherwise if u r not sure then go into something more easygoing. nuclear medicine is img friendly. so is psych. psych is more interesting and more easygoing. if u r doing IM without specializtion then it is a pain in the ass and not worth it. it is only worth it if u specialize. read "how to choose a medical speciality" by brian freeman (i think.) i met one guy who went into IM and burned out. now he is going for psych. also think about aerospace medicine, occupational medicine, physiatry (pm&r), etc. it seems as if IMG and FMG stand for internal medicin grad and family med grad.

well nuclear med is the ugly sister of radio. the career prospects r not as stable as other fields as only large hospitals will hire u since a rads dr can do nukes but vice versa is not true. it was 1+2 years but now 1+3 years. the field may grow as well. it pays good as well (over 200k). get the following book for more info : http://www.amazon.ca/Ultimate-Guide-Choosing-Medi... . another field that not many know about is PM & R. i think every doc should know about every speciality. for example does any1 here know of hyperbaric medicine? go to frieda to see the list. there is more to medicine than plain ol' IM.

yes, sometimes it looks like many IMGs just apply to IM without thinking a second about that decision. that´s a mistake, of course. there are plenty of options: pediatrics, nuclear medicine, pathology, FM, genetic, neurology, occupational medicine, physical medicine and rehabilitacion, psychiatry, public health, etc. there must be some good options among these ones, not only IM

That is true, but those specialties are very specific and most physicians won't apply there unless they are pretty sure about what they want. Internal Medicine as my personal opinion, is the root of medical practice, and from IM you can select several other specialties like cardio, GI, neuro, nephro, etc., and also is a requisite for other specialties not so related like anesthesio, derm. If you are not quite sure about what is that you want, IM is always a darn good point to start.
