Hey guys, Just hope if someone could clarfiy this.... 1) Is Rheumatoid Factor in R.A considered a type III or type II hypersensitivity rxn? I was thinking type II because it is IgM targeting IgG, however, golian's notes did mention it being type III 2)IS SLE considered type II or type III or both? THx in advance

I would think they are both type III reactions. It is immune complex hypersensitivty by definition : skin=Arthur's reaction=SLE Joint= RA.. Did you fnd your answer some place else or a better explanation though?

MEdo, Thx for the reply....however, I am still confused on SLE part, reason being I did this question on USMLE World; which presents a case of a mid aged woman with SLE comming to the clinic and did a CBC. Her workup showed pancytopenia. The answer to the question came out to type II hypersensitivty rxn. Jsut very confused. THx JACK

Jack, SLE is both. the joint disease and malar rash come from type three reactions via deposition of immune complexes. The thrombocytopenia, hemolytic anemia , are type two reactions . The throbocytopenia is actually ITP. Antibodies to gp 1b , gp 2b/3a. It may be the first manifestation of SLE. Anyway, you know now. SLE is a combination of both. Rheumatoid arthiris is a type 3

Jack if you study kaplan , then look under the pathology section for circulatory pathology, look under ITP where it say chronic ITP. and look under autoimmune hemolytic anemia I cant remember it was cold or warm but whatever. You will see what I'm talking about .
