Alcohol is metabolized almost entirely in the liver, where the enzyme alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) oxidizes alcohol to form acetaldehyde. Alcohol also can be oxidized by the liver enzyme catalase and by an enzyme complex known as the microsomal ethanol-oxidizing system (MEOS). Chronic alcohol consumption increases the amount of these liver enzymes, a process known as enzyme induction . As a result, there is a small increase in the ability of the liver to metabolize alcohol in alcohol-tolerant subjects, so that a larger dose of alcohol is needed to achieve the same blood and brain alcohol levels. However, the increase in alcohol oxidation in alcohol-tolerant subjects is limited and can account only partially for alcohol tolerance.
Enzyme induction in alcohol-tolerant subjects also is important because these enzymes normally metabolize hormones in the body, and also metabolize drugs other than alcohol. Thus, induction of these enzymes nparticularly cytochrome P450, a component of MEOS) leads to hormonal imbalances and also can alter the effects of drugs taken concomitantly. For example, enzyme induction increases the rate of testosterone metabolism in males, thus causing low testosterone levels in alcoholics. The cytochrome P450 enzyme system also is responsible for metabolism of medications such as barbiturates. Enzyme induction by alcohol can increase clearance of these substances from the body, resulting in metabolic cross-tolerance to barbiturates and other drugs.

I just did 46 Biostats and epi questions. got a 54 which is also the average. I am disappointed as I know I could have got atleast 4 questions right if I was thinking straight.
Today is Biochemistry day. I plan to read FA And Goljan high yield notes first. UW has a total of 168 questions in biochem which I plan to attack.
Also 50 assesment questions plus 100 Q book questions. So lets get started.
I will be posting my doubts here and in Biochem forum. Replies will be appreciated.

Shwe: Yeah I will do genetics at the end of the day. But I really need to brush up my reactions. Rate limiting enzymes. what accumulates when an enzyme is blocked etc.Happy wednesday to you too.
Here is a Biochem question for you, Tell me in what else do you find lecithin other than surfactant. Also name one reaction in which lecithin takes part. ( FA special)

Ive been trudging along so hard all day today. I am lagging but I am still happy with my progress. I miss him but he is not to be so and he had to go so he is gone. I am 11 days off my exam and then I had to get this call.
I have been trying to get in touch with this man for the last 5 months. I wanted him to arrange an observership for me. That is all I wanted. Rest I would have figured my own self. He never bothered to call me. Was busy is what he said ALWAYS.
So today of all the days, today when most of my defenses are down He calls me. Tells me i am very late in applying. My score and past record are the pits. I should try famiy medicine as that is a better field for women and may be even go back to my home country as Residency is more important to me than visa status.
That he could have helped me if I had contacted him earlier he is in the recruitmet committe but since I don't have step 3 there is nothing he can do for me.NOW.
Go fuck a pig assk hole. Sorry. but what nerve does anyone have to tell anyone that they r not good enough to get what they want. So I am late. So I don't have the greates track record so my visa expires and I have to leave this country and then come back so I have nothing going for me.
I still have hope. You bloody well don't take that away from me.

Don't let anyone affect your mind, your self. Don't and never. There are many good persons out there, there are many ways to get to your aim, and to change your thoughts into things.
No, you aren't late, you need to conquer this exam, and that is it. Please spend all your time for the exam, not else, The application process is still there, you may miss some, but not all. Hope is with you! Hope is with us.
After you've done with the exam, you can do all for the application. Just one thing you need to do now if you intend to have match this year: send ERAS your application package: LORs, Dean's Letter, Med school transcript, and Cover letter. That's all.
Do it and you will get it, girl!

Well I did 60 Kaplan Qbank Biochemistry questions this morning got a 68%.
Will do 60 or so UW questions and then move on to anantomy.Plan to everything but Neuroanat today.
If anyone has a question set for molecular biology and genetics could you please pass that on. I shall attack that either today or tom. So questions will be useful. Thanks.

I might seem philosophical now, but believe me, there IS a HIGHER PURPOSE to all our life struggles. I agree one should do their effort, without which it is not possible to go forward, but you put in that effort right?? but it did not work out. WHY? Because it was just not MEANT TO BE.
Things have a way of working out. In our limited vision, we feel we know what is best for us. But it is not so. There is someone up there, with a wider, broader vision for us. And we will be given what is ABSOLUTELY best for us. I bet you, a few years down the road, you would turn back and say, yeah in hind sight, there is no other place I would rather be.
So forget about this (however hard it is). You are a FIGHTER. YOU ARE A WINNER, and WINNERS NEVER QUIT. I am proud that you did Biochem questions and got 68%. Just keep doing your thing. You WILL get into the residency of your dreams. Where you are meant to be. Keep the faith.

hey, sweetheart!!! tell him, 'bring it on!!!' let all these pigs bug you. let them try and mess with your head. your final result will mean that much more after it all. when you get a residency, in spite of not bagging this observership, it is a punch in the face for that jerk. when he tells you to go back home instead, and you land the position of your dreams, you can mentally kick him where it hurts.
trust me, babe, you're destined for more than an observership with this bloke. if he's like this, what kind of an LoR is he likely to write you anyway? so, just look and hope for something better. otherwise, you'd have ended up following this fellow around, he'll of course not give you the letter until it's time to upload it to eras next year. when you get to finally see it, you'd be dismayed with it, and it would be too late to do anything else. so, take this for the blessing it is. something better is in store. yes, it is.

You had better believe I had troubles going on during my prep, besides my health issues. But I didn't write about them here, you know why? I chose to ignore them! Of course, a few of them didn't go away, but I was not about to let that bullshit get to me. And neither should you. After all, at the end of the day, who's looking out for you? YOU are, that's who. I have done 50 Biochemistry questions UW: 64%, 25 pharmac questions 56% and been going through Net anatomy photos.
Read HY Aanat from Goljan. I think I should do Neuroanat today rather than leave it for another day.
So I shall take a shower pick up my books and go to the park.

I understand what you going through. everyone have stress and tension in thier life only those win who knows how to overcome these.and you are the one of them
Believe me sis i know personally many IMGs who was facing problem with visa status,financial crsis and family stress but they faced all these problems with high spirit and positive thoughts. No one can stop you to get your target even not your luck. i believe that hard work always pays off.
don,t keep bad feeling about that person . forgive him . and for observership you can go to hospitals or even clinics(private offices) by yourself and sumbitt your request .(some of hospitals because of HIPPA law don,t offer observership).
right now just concentrate on your exam after it do rest of things

Ive been having a very bad concentration day. I have no idea why. So now that I have tried everything under the sun to concentrate I am back in my pad. I think I am just going to do lots fo questions. Quit the reading for now. time to do Q bank and UW.
