keep going: Penetrance is a single gene disorder concept.Not so much a autosomal/ sex linked disorder concept.
How ever Kaplans talks of only autosomal diseases and not sex linked.
this question is very straight forward.
It is a X- linked dominant disease which the father has.He can transmit his X to only his daughters.Son's are spared. Hence all the daughters shud be affected. How ever penetrance is only 60%, which means that for every possibilty only 60% of those chances will have phenotypic disease. hence the probability is 60%.
This is my reasoning. Anyone feel free to correct me. edie..any suggestions?

yes medoc agree that part but my concern is that we do not have penetrance theory acceptble for sex-linked diseas which is in this question presented,if u read goljan's book or notes he very clearely mentions if have father have mutant gene all his daughters will be equally effected no story of whether penetrance is theer or not b/c the mutant is on sex gene ..penetrance theory ok for autosomal but sex-linked???well ye sedie and other fellow friends if know plzz correct me..this question bugging me since long..we had discussion over it before but no satisfactory answer till today..thanks medoc for reply,see if now i make clear or any sense to what my doubt is

Hi Medoc and KG. Here's my take on it. I am inclined to agree with Medoc, because only daughters of a carrier father can be affected. 60% penetrance related to chance of expressing the phenotype. Keep in mind that daughters get another X from mom, so this further lends to the variable expression of a disease that is not 100% penetrant on the X chromosome from dad. Consider this:
"The presence of a dominant allele, or two recessive alleles, is not always a guarantee that the trait will be displayed in the phenotype, a phenomenon called incomplete penetrance. Variable expressivity also occurs, with some individuals more affected than others of the same genotype. In most cases the reasons for these differences are unknown, but they are assumed to be due at least in part to other differences between individuals. For instance, if there are differences between individuals in the other genes with which the product of incompletely penetrant or variably expressed allele interacts, this may account for some of these differences in expression."

Hi , when you study, you get hungry easily, we atleast need energy , glucose , so eat healthy one, excercise then after exm.... exercise more , eat right, but back to regular portion , regular eating time instead of non stop like while studying .
I score all subj 99 to 92 in myschool days if while studying eating nonstop with sweet black coffee . On the day of exm 1st day , my girl friend said, wow , what are you doing, what have you done girl, are you sure you're studying, cause they all thinner than a stick, pencil after non sleep, no eat studying .
Me , eat well, sleep well, study well, no repeat much of notes. MAy be I sh do like that instead of sleepless now, exhausted , study not well , need alot of recheck, may be reread cause , less sleep., less eat cause less concentration .

Study499: U might be a victim of time differences, and the time stamps on my journal don't correspond to the time I really am in, how ever I sleep between 5 to 7 hours. Which depends on how much i have achieved the previous day.
P2B: The prep has honestly been going on for years. but I will take this exam on 29th August. I might change the date if I do terribly on NBME but I am hoping I don't need to.
