Any late registrants out there? let's pull our resources together if you are applying for the 2007 match

  #2

I am giving my Step 2 Ck in Jan....have already applied for interviews with Step 1 and CS scores...hoping to get matched in 2007.....what do you mean by pooling in our resources?

  #3

too late, you may waste your money.

But hope for the best.

Good luck.

not really wasted money. u can still go for the scramble. In real life, anything is possible. Let's say the PD knows you, they see you during the grand-rounds or other meetings...Or the place you interviewed, they didn't rank because you got thrown out of the match, then it happens they have an opening for the scramble...lucky you...gotta have lots of faith, guys...it's not over yet until it's over.

Robin082006, i really hate when people make blanketed staments misinforming other members based on 0 knowledge! Here are some facts that I would like to impart on you so that you will not come across clueless next time :-)

Facts are..

1. Though most but not all... programs have selected their candidates, a good bit of programs wait till the last batches of interviews to make their decisions.. Think about it.. the candidate that you interview last will be most fresh in your mind compared to someone you interviewed in Oct if you are still looking to fill 2-3 more spots.

2.Depending on the programs.. deadlines can reach up to Feb, 01, 2006 (based on Freida online and 2 lists i have from residenymatching.com). if you get your score reported by Feb 21, 2007 (ROL deadline=ECMG match guideline on their website) then you will still be eligible for the match. You do not have to wait for your ecfmg certificate to arrive as ecfmg will inform your program.

3. Even if you take step 2 by mid Feb and your score reports before March 13, you can scramble as long as you apply to at least 1 program ( Ecfmg website scramble guidelines).

4. Money? What exactly are you spending money on? You get the first 30 or so free from Eras if you participate in the match.. and also entitled to 30 on Scramble day. The only money you put out is for a hotel and airfare (depending on how far you go). And for some, this may be the first time that we participate in the match so we have a budget for it.

5. two of my classmates obtained positions through the scramble last year. And one was withdrawn from the match because his CS score wasnt in.. I have my CS and step 1.. the CK only takes 3-4 weeks to get ur score.. Oh did I also tell you that my eras application, LOR's, MSPE are already uploaded and ready to go.

so, in sum, let's stop being negative and offer sound advice as oppose to offering crappy advice with no basis of reference, your misinforming members and to me that's not being helpful and dents your credibility. I would have to say that applying so late in the game is on a case to case basis. So next time you reply.. why not rephrase your post by saying " it is a little late but still doable.. if you meet the following deadlines and participate in the scramble then you can do it! and good luck "

bikerdoc..

what i meant by pooling our resources is supporting each other through step 2ck-prep and reminding each other of important deadlines and comparing notes. Bikerdoc what specialties are you looking at? I'm applying for peds and fm

later guys...

Manolok,

What I said is based on posts of unmatched people here.

However what I said is a possibility, i said " May", do you understand?

And also have another possibility , that is "Hope for the best".

I never have an idea to offend people or make them distressed, it's true, I have sent about 150 emails to PDs and they advise me wait for next year.

Come down and think, I am not a newbie in this forum mate.

Robin, I understand.. the whole matching process is stressful as it is.. so may have flown a little off the handle. anyway, what speciality are you applying for? are you done and have your ecfmg certificate? Right now the scramble is more of a reality for me. I apologize if i came across too harsh, just have my sights on making it next year and not taking another year off. Let me know your thoughts.

Manolok,

My close friend applied with step 1 score (95) only, CS waiting, CK in Dec 30, 130 programs, 1 month USCE, 1 US LOR, 2 home LOR, graduate 2003, need Visa, and until now he received 15 rejections, no IVs, other programs are silent.

Now I plan for next year.

I applied with step 1 score 94/233. CS was awaiting results and passed after I applied. CK on JAN 15TH sad

I'm still hopeful for the 2007 Match and if not, I'll sure go for the scramble. Alot of top notch programs would rather go with unfilled spots than fill them with less than competent candidates.

As of yet, I've got 5 interviews. 3 Path and 2 IM all in very good univ. programs or Excellent CHUA ones. I got 2 in the past few days. So, still hoping for more.

I don't have USCE, no US LoR's. 2005 Grad. and GC holder.

I am just about finished with the Crush book. Aiming to swiftly read the Kaplan books in 15 inshaa Allaah and brush up on my step 1 with FA for step 1 ( I got a ton of notes that I'm certain are retested on ck). I'll do the UW the month before the test (roughly Dec. 15)

I know that's an extremely tight schedule, but I HAVE TO DO IT. I'LL DO IT Inshaa Allaaah.

Good Luck to all of you whether you decide to go for this year or next year's match.

Well, here is my situation, 2004 grad, GC holder, step 2-CS; passed, step 1-80(had 3 attempts, tough time with basics), 6 months USCE, 2 US LOR's from Dept Chairs, 1 from medical school in manila. Step 2-CK scheduled for Jan. 25, 2007. I know my attempts might hurt me so I may wait and scramble with step 2-ck under my belt, so I can counter the low score and attempts on step 1). Just want to do it the right way.

  #13

Manolok. Try your best in your ck test. You never know what could happen in the scramble.

Even though I heard that it's almost a joke (the scramble) but I've also heard from friends and doctors how you can end up in a good program through the scramble. So I guess the only thing you have control over is how well you do on your test and how you can improve your credentials.

Leave the rest to God:-)

Good Luck to all of us

thanks very much dr.looi, I spent the whole day calling up FP programs and found a handful with late deadlines even one on Feb.1, 2007, no minimal requirements, no attempt req, but not sponsoring visas and need USCE, so I would be a perfect match for those programs.. and guess what 2 of them were University based in the South. This was the point I was trying to make earlier, if you are resourceful and posess a positive outlook you will get a positive outcome. I spent so much time dwelling on negative criticisms that it really brought me down and affected my performance in my previous step attempts. Further, I also read on previous posts that coordinators and directors can be very rude when you call... on the contrary, each one was nice.. and I called about 50 today. Like I said, its a case to case basis as all of us are unique. So, the moral of my story is take time to read the positive posts on here.. you can get so much more out of them then someone telling you NO its not possible without giving you any solutions. When someone presents to me a NO .. I will do everything I can to turn it around and make it a YES.

Peace

Kykie, thanks for the encouragement! I basically obtained all of my education here from kindergaten to grad school then went to the Philippines to do medical school. Foreign students had the option to do electives in our 4th year, but we had to do all the leg work which really sucked. But I applied indepently and did 3 months of Internal Medicine including one month of a Sub-internship at SUNY Downstate in Brooklyn, NY. Then I did 3 months of Pediatric Ambulatory Emergency Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine and 2 months at Texas Childern's. All of them were HANDS ON so I think that is why most programs request that you have direct patient contact. While I was there, I got to suture, draw blood work, do IV insertions, do pap smears, workup and follow up patients, order labs, did a clinical presentation on cerebral palsy . So when looking for USCE, make sure you ask if you will have direct contact or at the very least do a presentation.

I got a couple of really good LOR's from there, but one crappy one... oh well, cant please em all. Your best bet is to look for an externships/observership OR if you are still a medical student apply as a visiting foreign exchange student. Check Baylor College of Medicine, I can give you a contact there just PM me.

Good luck to you too Dr. Looi, I'm looking at some programs you were inquiring about after looking at some of your posts. So what programs have you applied to?

  #18

I applied to program in and around Ohio state. So, as you see I've been alittle restrained by the location factor, but add the USCE and ECFMG certification (at the time of application) factors and you don't end up with many programs to begin with.

Surprisingly, I found that pathology program have less stringent requirement (other than scores) compared to internal medicine.

So far, been to one interview and have a couple more the next couple of weeks.

Good Luck to you and all of us smiling face

LooLi

Hi manolok. 2004 grad. IMG. Passed CS (just found out last week) and Step 1 (87, no attempts). GC holder. I haven't done ERAS yet. People told me it is too late. No LOR from med school. Do I have to go back to my residents in med school to get it? Have four months of observership in a clinic here in the US. Now I am reading this and now regretting that I didn't start my ERAS application. Is it too late for me to try my luck at the post scramble? Still planning to take CK late Jan or early Feb.

  #20

I am actually still hopeful for the match 2007. My Step 2 Ck is in Jan 2007 and I hope to habe my Score by Feb. I have my Step 1 / Step 2CS and a GC. I also have a US PhD and 2 US LORs and 2 home LORs. I have had two interviews so far....one in the place I work at and i really want in there. I think I have a decent chance to get in that place provided I dont screw up on the CK...10 rejects so far and waiting on 10 programs more. I only want a particular subject so i did not apply to a lot of programs so not a lot of money wasted. A lot of people told me tis too late and all that sh** but I thought what the heck it costs like a 100$ and whats the worse that could happen anyways...lol....lo and behold i had two very good interviews....my experience - DO NOT BELEIVE ANYONE BUT YOURSELF.....specially if you have nuthing to lose anyways. If you dont take the chance for your career who will?

  #21

Done and applied to 15 programs, 6 FP and 10 Peds... Not expecting much at all. If anything gonna scramble.. Wasted alot of time on application and ps. So crunch time with the boards done IM, almost done Peds. Secrets couple of pages.. really worried about screwing up the CK...
