1 wk old newborn was admitted to ICU after an apparently normal delivery from a healthy mother. THe infant has displayed abnormal eating patterns and reduced levels of behavioral alertness indicative of neurological involvement. The routine bacteriolgical cultures of both blood and CSF were negative. CSF plated on Eaton's agar yielded minute slow growing colonies

II) Speciation of causative agent(s) could be most accurately determined by
a) microscopic exam
b) carbohydrate fermentation
c) IF using monclonal Ab to surgace antigens

III) An antibiotic generally prescribed in treatment of this type of neonatal infection is
a) penicillin
b) tetracycline

An increasing # of women are asymptomatic carriers of Mycoplasma sp in genital tract. Ureaplasma urealyticum is slowest growing of Mycoplasma sp. They are isolatable on special nutrient media, such as Eaton's agar, which contains highly purified ingredients and antibiotics which prevent the overgrowth of most conventional bacteria. As with all mycoplasmas, Ureaplasma sp do not contain a cell wall, thus do not react with Giemsa stain. The abscence of cell wall also precludes choice of penicillins. The organisms are surrounded only by a cell membrane, which contains species-specific antigens and others which cross-react with human antigen. Many are pleomorphic. Ureaplasma sp differ from Mycoplasma so by their urea requirement. All Mycoplasmal organisms require sterols for growth
Ureaplasma sp are easily distinguished by presence of unique membrane antigens detectable using immunofluorescence and monoclonal antisera. Erythromycin is effective antibiotic in tx of Ureaplasma infection.
