I am trying to determine if my unknown organism is Proteus vulgaris or Proteus mirabilis. Vulgaris and Mirabilis are very present a lot of similar results with most of the possible tests we can do in class. The test that I did so far are; MacConkey, KIA, Indole. My KIA came out K/A glucose fermentor, H2S positive and gas production was present. My Indole test came out positive (red strip of liquid after 10 drops of Kovacs Reagent). I am definite that my unknown is a Proteus vulgaris because of the Indole test. Now I need one last test to confirm my unknown. No Carboxylase test can be done in class so I am not even considering it. Maltose fermentation is one test I can do too, but I didn't see any Maltose broth available in class. Another one I can do is test if my unknown ferments Sucrose either normally or delayed. But how can I go about this? Or what other test can you suggest that I might be able to do? Thank you!

If they are both swarming on blood agar or other nonselective agar then you're done. P. mirabilis and P. vulgaris are the only two organisms that swarm. If you have an indole positive result AND it swarms (AND it's pure - that goes without saying) then you have P. vulgaris.
