Two weeks prior to Christmas vacation, a sixth grader developed a severe pharyngitis. he also complained of fever & tenderness in his joints. A thorough exam of child revealed that an infection had existed even earlier but was not reported by the child. Pain was experienced in multiple joints. His throat was grossly inflamed and throat swab culture produced small, clear beta hemolytic colonies on blood agar
