Dear All I have been on a Psych rotation in London for the past 4 years and am about to write my USMLE and would be looking at the 2008 match. I passed out of medical school from Delhi in 1999 and dont have a PG from home. I would appreciate if any of you could kindly answer any of the questions below: 1) What scores should be reasonable to get a residency in Psych? 2) Im thinking of taking Step 2 in Feb, CSA in April and Step 1 in July. Is that a workable plan? 3) With my above details, given that I dont have any USCE, what are my chances of getting a psych residency? Above all, any advice apart from answers that any of you would want to give me is much appreciated as Im a little lost and quite recently, due to circumstances, have been driven to write this exam and explore chances in the US. Many thanks in advance.

How important is USCE for a psych residency in the US? Is it beneficial to have a royal college membership from the uk, or is it held against the person?

to zeleo74: 1) the higher the scores, the better. Anything above 85, if not 90, would be considered good. 2) I don't think you'll have enough time for Step 1; remember, the number of attempts matter as well as the fact that, once you pass an exam, you cannot change the score. For CSA you don't need that much time anyhow (unless you have a significant language barrier). 3) USCE is preferred by most programs, but required by fewer programs. (we are not talking here about the top-tier programs, though). to samuel_levy: 1) see comments above; 2) I don't know how beneficial it is, but it cannot be held against the applicant, that's for sure.

get usce. this is getting more important every year. contact every single place and so this for sure. i believe it is as important as scores. also fill out every part of ur application (publications, volunteer, etc.) also do not write a boring dry PS. my PS was complimented on the trail. also without usce ur interviews wont go as well. my ivs were a cake walk as i talked about my externship. if u dont have usce and only have scores u will end up in a crappy sweatshop or 1 horse town. in my view, it is better to take the step 2 one month earlier and get a few points less and do USCE than not.
