Dear friens: I am a medical school student in my final year and planning to get USCE by doing electives for 12 weeks in NY. I got permssion both form New York Medical college and Mount Sinai in New York. Good things about Mount Sinai is that it seems popular among international sutdents and it provides housing in dormitory for 900 US dollars. Mampractice is covered with 300 dollars of tuition fee. Bad thing is that it require J1 and in that case i am subject to 2 year rule: I have to comeback to my homecoutry and saty 2 years before I reapply for J1 for residency. As for New York Medical College, it is o.k with tourist visa. However, it requires me to purchase malpractice insurace on my own and it costs me 1300 dollars. No housing. so concerned about the cost of living. Also not may information about whether people there are friendly to IMGs and giving LOR. Please give me some advices. And let me know of your opinions. Which one would you go for it?

if your medical school is from europe you can get malpractice insurance from MPS (Medical Protection Society-UK) or MDU (Medical defence union-UK). they do cover a few countries outside the UK so please check to see if you are eligible. it is FREE. i got covered and im from Malaysia.

between the two schools i cant say which one is better, ive personally never been to either. however i would be hesitant to go on a j1 visa to MSSM because i do not like to subjected to any 2 year rules. ultimately its your choice. if you have the money go for NYMC. at the end of the day its your education and if you can afford it, its money well spent.

I went in the US 2 years ago with a work and travel program and they mentioned on my visa (which was a J1 visa): bearer is not subject to section 212 (E). two year rule does not apply. is it necessary to be subject to that rule if you apply for J1, or the program i went with is special in this concern?

Dear ManuNastai: Great to hear your case. Thus in your case, does the U.S program mentioned that the bearer is not subject to section 212(E) on your DS-1019? Or the embassy in your home country mentioned that on your visa when you got an interview? Did you first ask for your U.S program to mention waiver to 2 year rule? Could please be alittle bit more specific on your experience? It would really help a medical school student in need and desparately looking for cheaper and better opportunities. Thanks alot.

no, I didn't know about thar rule when i applyed for it. when i posted above, i just read on the visa on my passport. also i asked now some people and they told me that the J1 visa has 13 subvisas. among those is the work and travel which is not subject to it and which doesn't let you work in the medical field and there are 12 others among which is the research (or something like that) visa which is.. that's about all i know. maybe you should read an official web site where you get a correct and complete description of all the visas

also, you can't go on a J1 'cause it doesn't let you touch patients, that's why most of the Med Schools ask for B1. @dharjma: I sent an email to MPS to see if they cover my country too but they didn't respond yet. It's been a few days now. How did you find out if they cover malaysia? you sent mails or is there a hidden option on the website that i didn't see?

Dear Manu: I got your e-mail. Could you please tell me first where you are from. I got information on MSSM over the Internet and as for NYMC, it is through my parent school. Best wishes, Michelle

Also as for MPS coverage, I sent an e-mail and got an answer that they do not cover my country. I think you'd better call them on student hot-line number. It's on the web page.
