Hi!

I would like to know about people's past experiences regarding prematches. I know there is a lot of people who applied to the match last year and didnt match. Some got prematch offers, didn't take the offer and didn't match. Others didn't take the prematch but at the end did match either in that same program or another one. If you could change things and go back in time, would you accept the prematch? I think although the decision of taking a prematch is everybody's own decision, maybe this experiences may help those with prematches decide what's the best for them. Thank you!!

well i rejected a prematch and dont know if i will b able to make it in match
its a gamble

did the same as loser...bottom line is, if you dont wanna be at a place for the next 3 years..if you cant see yourself achieving what you want to by being at the place you are being offered..simply drop the idea.

forget all the bull**** about "a bird in hand...etc."...it will do you little good to find out later that the bird in your hand was a vulture which took pleasure in biting you QID..

on the other hand..if you have something that ranks #1-#5 on your wish list....simply go for it!

my wish list starts at one and ends at three...two rather cos i didnt take one....lol

  #5

That was good advice, thanks! In some cases, it's not that you dont entirely like the place where you were offered prematch, it's more like you are curious about your top #1-2 choices, but then again, should IMGs be picky or be safe? smiling face

I'd play safe, but thats megrin

  #7

did reject 1 prematch. not an excellent candidate but will take the risk

I havent had a prematch offer..but my bat has received 3 ..he wasnt formally invited to the programs but his participation in the morning reports drew an immediate interview and resulted in prematches for him....Out of 3 that were offered to him he blew up the last offer by dating program directors beloved daughter who fell in love with my beloved bat .PD didnt love it and did as one would imagine.

It is a tough decision...I say if your ready to make the move, and you've gone over the contract, salary and benefits (including fellowship placements) with a fine toothed comb..go for it!

It depends on how many IVs do you have and what kind of hospital extends you the offer. I would also add, the family issues.

I have 10 more IVs but the hospital that offered me the prematch was my first interview (cant compare with other places cuz most of my ivs are in december and january). I've only been to a second iv and I like this second program much better but they only offer prematch in january. I would appreciate any other comments. Thanks!

My only word of advice - Don't sell yourself short. My four words of advice: Don't sell yourself short.

"Lol....see you next year in this forum again...... "

Thanks faaa78 for your vicious wishes...

even if I do end up groping about for a position next year, I will have the solace from the knowledge that I selected a year of hardship over a a life time of harship...

anyways, it seems that you have some pangs left over after accepting that prematch....well, deal with it in your own way, I am a mild person not roused by such insults, but believe me, the world basically operates on the principle of boomerang...in other words, you get what you give out...

goodluck..

Please lets calm down... Your energy should be focused on ace each interview... not in saying unpropper things or to get offended by such...

Good luck!!!

Hi! I hope you can advice me....I got a prematch from a FM program I interviewed at recently. The program is nice except it is in a rural area. They usually get AMGs.Only 1 or 2 IMGs in the porgram. I am an IMG. It is #3 on my list. My #1 choice (program in a small city) had a 2nd look party and the PD gave positive feedback about my chances to get in the program(but they DONT prematch).Almost all IMGs. Both university-based.

How should I go about in telling my #3 if they could give me time to think about the offer without offending them or sounding not interested (bec I am interested!) and how can I ask #1 about my chances? I'm so confused now. Please help. Thanks!

  #19

Prematched into my #1, so it's a painless process.

  #20

congrats Tiger07. I wish I was as lucky as you.

Well...I declined a prematch offer in Ob/Gyn. It was a very hard decision to make and I actually wished that I had not been given this choice. I would have loved it if it were my choice#1 (envy tiger...). This hospital was not in my top 5 at that moment but location was very good and to be frank program was average.
I felt I was underselling myself (will never know if there is any truth in thissad).
The person who helped me in this decision was my mentor who believes that I will Matchnod
Let's see... Will know whether I made the right decision on Mar 12th...

Michigan21, I had thought about a situation like yours when I attended interviews, what if my #3 offered me a position and I really wanted #1? I decided that if so, I would try to ask #1 to counter offer, but that's because I did a rotation with #1 and know them so well that I am certain they would rank me regardless.
