hi guys have interviews at maimonides and bronx-lebanon. as those areas are unsafe, and manhattan is damn expensive, planning to stay near newark international airport as have to stay there for 5 days. sounds good or is there any better option?

how does one actually get to those hospitals for interview early morning? by subway - how long would it take? by cab - it would take ages and be expensive right?

something tells me you're not that familiar with NYC and that "those areas are unsafe"-kind of opinions are quotes from other people. I could not vouch for Bronx-Lebanon, but Maimonides is in Boro Park which is a heavily Hassidic neighborhood; that should speak volumes about its safety.

As far as accomodation and transportation in NYC are concerned,

thanks. yeah, never been to NY before.

how is this option: stay at a hotel near Newark airport. Hotel shuttle to newark station/airport, then via train to NY Penn Station in 20 mins, and then subway from there to either maimonides or bronx-lebanon in 40 mins. correct?

so no point staying in expensive hotels in NYC...right?

Stay near newark..no issue

Use the subway-best bet.

Get down to 34th st penn station on A/C/E subway lines and then hop onto R.

Get off at Washington Sq/Heights and jump onto D and sit tight till the 9th Ave or the next stop.

This should put you on 9th ave or 10th ave respectively..then walk down to the 48th st and you should be at MMC.

Goodluck!

thanks guys. yeah had checked out hopstop.com after seeing wikitravel great site. well had considered ymca but thought its very basic and I have to be in NY or 5 days so might as well live in some comfort and cheaply smiling face Also the uestion of security of luggage. Thirdly I need to go to easton hospital two days later which is 1 hr drive from newark. this place (holiday inn) has pool, free internet, airport shuttle and all for $80/night which i thought was neat.

maverick, if you're planning to get to your interview two days after your interview date, then Newark is definitely the way to go! While the commute between Newark and your interviews might not be what people are used to in Midwest or in the South, it is nevertheless, as pointed out by apurv already, VERY time-consuming. When you'll get into one of the two programs you mentioned, you might want to consider living in NJ and working in NYC, but for the purpose of the interview day, it is out of discussion.
You can also ask the PC from Bronx-Lebanon if she could assist you in any way with the accomodation, sometimes residents can host interviewees for the night before the interview.

I agree, my IV is with bronx-Leb and I intend to catch the train to Penn Stn and subway it. Was in NY 2 years agao and the subways are the way to go. Plus after Guiliani, everything is pretty much cleaned up and I found NY very safe. I mean I saw some late night Broadway shows and walked back to my hotel - there were so many cops around, there were no worries!!smiling face

Cordmd is right...I got off at Newark too..u can either take the train from airport to Penn station and subway/taxi/metro it...

or do wat I did, rent a car for $30 (plus tax) a day from Newark, trust mapquest like your life line and drive it, it's not too bad..over the GW bridge/Lincoln tunnel it shud only take you about 1.5 hours on a really busy day..be prepared with tolls..this was totally new to me $6 for almost every tunnel and bridge u wanna pass thru!

well gd11, i agree it is time consuming, and dont think i am contesting that, just want to get the facts cleared objectively.

but isnt it only 40 mins extra? i mean from hotel to newark station would take 10 mins and newark station to penn station around 20 mins plus 10 mins for waiting etc.

if one lives in manhattan then also one would spend minimum 10-15 mins getting to the subway station and getting the right connection to bronx-lebanon or brooklyn.

so is the extra 25-30 mins that big an issue. am i missing something here?

if u want to see and roam around manhattan then it wud be difficult living in newark but why is interviewing so difficult?

NO big deal maverick ..You are not missing anything ..perfectly cool to stay in newark ....Dont let doubts creep in and go ahead.

Newark is closeby .I have stayed farther than that ..stayed in philly for new york ..and recently i booked a hotel in chicago ..i booked it online and didnt realize that the hotel was in a suburb which was closer to detroit than chicago ...So i stayed in detroit for an interview in chicago ...no big deal as long as you make it in time to the interview ..you can take eternity to get back to your hotel .
