hi everyone, im in a top med school in india with scores of 78/192 and 250/99 on the usmle. im yet to graduate and take CS

my query is--can my step 2 score compensate for my step 1 ?

can i apply to programs that have cutoffs like 80 or 82 for the step 1 or not ?

ive got a couple of research publications and am working on 2 more research projects ?

wouldnt the programs consider th whole application before rejecting me ?

i plan for an internal medicine program at a univ. based hospital, but am confused right now

plan to go for the next year's match

i still have 6 months to grduate, can US clin experience solve my problems, atleast partially ?

can i be selected for IM ? only in community hospitals ?

should i also apply family medicine ? i have no interest though

please advice me on my chances, i'll be really thankful

Hi Srini:
I also took Step 1 and my score wasn't very good. I got 84, which is below the average. However in my step 2 my score was 98. I also have research experience. I am in the process of applying for residency right now and so far I got very good interviews in top 10 programs. Despite the fact that their cut-off is 85, as stated in their websites.

To answer your questions:

1) Does my step 2 score compensate my step 1?. I think, yes. The scores are the easiest way to assess for competitiveness between applicants, they need to see that you are not an average student and this is reflected by your high score in step 2. A lot of people will tell you that step 1 is more important than step 2 and this is because most of the AMG/IMG apply with only step 1 for interviews. However, after discussing with a PD what they care about is that you are capable to be a good intern and that you have the knowledge to do so, which is measured by step 2 and step3 and CS.

However you have to be careful when you apply for residency, because most of the times the applications are reviewed by program coordinators (there is no way you can review 1,000 statements) they need to filter the people by their score and graduation year, which sometimes can cause you troubles.

Here is when your research experience comes handy.

I applied to the research pathway because I was very committed to an academic career. Sometimes, not always, the directors of this pathway is different that the PD of the residency. I wrote to them in advance to show my interest in their area of research and in their programs. They received less applications, usually MD, PhD or MD with clinical experience and they have more time to review your CV. If they are interested, they will contact the PD. That happened to me twice.

Does USCE matters?. Definitely, I know Mayo Clinic at Rochester that offer opportunities to IMG. In addition they have a stablished research pathway program.

I think you definitely have good chances to match in a good university program. Kepp working in your research.

Good Luck!
