A patient come into your office - he has diabetes and hypertension and is obese even if "he doesn't eat to much". You explain to him than he has to loose some weght and he is prrety excited about the diet and exercise plan. After 2 month he is the same- same weight, no diet no exercise.A passive - aggresive person is somebody who approves your ideas but does what he wants to do despite the advice.

Thank you very much NE .

This was exactly what I understood from my first read....... but then I read that the person has some hidden unconscious hostily which he expresses by not accomplishing the assigned job ...... for example a physician ignores and does not answer the direct questions of a patient whom he finds annoying ........it confused me raised eyebrow

Yeah the person is hostile but subconsciously, if it were conscious , it wouldn't be a personality disorder. It is unconscious, and you got it all right. You both are talking about the same thing. grin

If it was conscious it would be a MEAN PERSON not a personality disorder ( i think thats what kaplan says)

characterised by procastination, inefficiency, sullen, outwardly complient but inwardly defiant
asks for help but does not comply with physician's advice

This is the explanation in Behavioral scie in Medicine, Fadem. Given an example very similar to the one by NE! Excellent book for clarification of unclear areas in kaplan notes.

"I promise you my dear - I will clean the dishes and wash the car - I will buy the groceries ...

1 day later: sorry honey, I just sat in front of the TV..."

if he did it on purpose = he's a bastards; if unconsciouly = passive agressive.

I dont know where you guys are getting it as a personality disorder. i remember kapan saying that its a defense mechanism. All defense mechanism are unconcious, and if its not..... like laura said, hes just mean .

In Beh Scie in Medicine, Fadam it comes under personality disorders not otherwise specified I.e not coming under wild, weird or worried grps

i realy liked this 1 when i studied defens mechanisms:

this example was by dr. daugherty: u promise ur classmates 2 share ur notes, u go home without sharing themgrin that was mean only GOD knows how many times i suffered from this

but it is UNCONSCIOUS becuz its defens mechanism

Yah while doing personality disorders and defence mechanisms;felt like I had all of them, but as they say if you think you have then most likely your assumption is wrong.
Kaplan gives sublimation as most mature defence mechanism but I had impression that humour is most mature mechanisms.rolling eyes
