Could anyone tell me what part of the nephron secretes prostaglandins? Also...I've read a few different functions for the macula densa from my textbooks...could anyone tell me the ones that will be pertinent to Step1?

Please write down all the functions of Macula densa which you have read so that we should be able to tell you which is important and which is not .

Best of luck

I read that it secretes a locally active vasopressor which acts on adjacent afferent arteriole to decrease GFR.
It stimulates release of renin via prostaglandins. (this is where i am confused...don't prostaglandins vasodilate the afferent arterioles to increase GFR?)
I guess what I want to know is what happens when the macula densa senses a decrease in Na and what happens when it senses an increase in Na? Also, how does it use the prostaglandins in each response? Are prostaglandins constantly produced to maintain vasodilation of afferent arterioles and thus GFR?

Sorry for asking so many questions but I can't find any sources that give me a clear and thorough explanation. Thanks!

Macula densa senses the flow dependent concentration of
  1. Na
  2. Na Cl
  3. Cl

There is no consensus which is sensed but among the above the mentioned items someone is sensed and signal is passed to Glomerular arterioles to adjust the GFR and RBF.

What is the nature of signal ? Still no consnsus .It may be
  1. Adenosine or
  2. ATP or
  3. prostaglandines or
  4. NO

So no need to waste time on these nature . The important thing to note is that Macula densa sense the flow (Na or NaCl) and sends signal to re - adjust GFR accordingly. This is called Tubuloglomerular feedback.

Best of luck
