U can check people and thier Credentials ,minimum is 85+ and u are dreaming about Surgery u can see lot of peoles with 99 and 99 struggling . I am from top university in UK and still struggling. My score are in Mid 90 s. U jsut got to understand hard reality. I am not discouraging you but what I am speaking is bitter reality and anything is possible.I think with 78/192 game is over even if u are from AIIMS. Think of other branches and 90 s in step 2 and finish of step 3 get 90 s in that and this might help you to get IM residency, but for Surgery game might be over. Yes get some USCE that will definitely help you ,get some publications and see if u can hook on to a great program director things might help a little bit. Its not the end------------------keep trying

Hey Rahul, my advice to you is to apply for an elective at a relatively good surgical program (middle-tier). Work your ass off during the month you'll be there and if possible, try doing at least two months of elective at that place. Most importantly, pick the service with the chairman and the program director. Once you are there, get to know the residents. As much as we deny it, the residents have a huge say in who gets selected ultimately. I would make myself be known but not overdo it. Work hard, do your job but don't be a gunner. If you do so, I beleive you have a good chacnce of matching to that particular program. If not, at least you get some great clinical experience and great LORs. Ultimately, if you want to do surgery, don't let anyone dissuade you form it. I cannot imagne myself doing anything but surgery. Good luck.

Hi Rahul, Try to get into preliminary surgery. Its possible if you can get good scores in step2 esp in tough places like New York. If you have research and a strong interest in surgery to backup I think you can gain backdoor entry into a good categorical position

well it would be difficult rahul. u gotta accept that fact. but no its not impossible. so first evaluate whether u actually wanna struggle to get surgery or wud u b fine with the easier option of medicine. now if only surg is the thing, get a >260 on step 2 (not just 99). also go do ur internship in US adding 1 year USCE. also do 2-3 months surgery electives at different places where they dont see step 1 score to get u the elective like Harvard etc. this would work out to be expensive but u can take a loan. also while doing USCE, do research and get to know people. surgery wont be that difficult then. GL!!
