hi i am a medical student from one f the top schools in india. my problem is my step 1 score is 78/ 192 what can i do know to maximise my chances of making it to a university based internal medicine program ? or am i dreaming too much ? can a good step 2 score compensate for this ? ive got a couple of research papers my name and am continuing 2 more works can i even get USCE (im still in medical school) with this step 1 score ? can that solve my problem partially i'll appreciate any sincere advice, even if my dreams of an academic internal medicine program are ruined please advice---could i even manage to get a Residency with this score ?

hey, dont worry, sometimes things like this happen. you can compensate it with good step 2 and step 3 score. ur doing good thing with research. get some USCE and great letters. it also helps if you have kin in US who are doctors. follow your dreams. you can get into residency.

thank you so much for your replies......getting emotional about things...the score only came 2 days back like a disaster...... but my question is can i still manage to get US clinical experience with this kind of score ? I earlier thought of applying for a clerkship at the Mayo Clinic !!!!!!! Actually since i couldnt find malpractice insurance for a short while, i dont have many options ........should i still pay the $300 and apply for a clerkship there ? any other options where the school provides malpractice ? i thank you all for genuinely replying .....

Sir, the application fee at the Mayo Clinic is $300, non-refundable ! they have asked for the step 1 scorecard and my entire bio-data do u think its worth the risk ? The other thing is u adviced of high score on the step 3.....does that really matter ? (since most Americans only apply with step 1 and most IMGs apply with step 1 and 2 scores) Ive heard that when a student scores below the cutoff, usually 80 (if they have a cutoff) they dont even read the entire application..is this really true ? Have u ever heard of someone getting this score in step 1 and getting into a good Internal Medicine Residency program ?

hey rahul.doctor, if u can get the clerkship at the mayo clinic, go for it ! if u get some good work done there and get to know the right ppl aka the program director or attendings who have some say in the selection process, u shud be fine .. try and get good letters from there ... focus on getting a good score on ur ck and step3 (if u require a visa), try and get to the US a few months before applying and get an observerhsip or something .. i know this guy from Pakistan who had scores in the 70s with 2 attempts on step1 .. he ended up doing neuro from one of the top programs in the country ... cant tell u which one .. but the point is, all is not lost .. u can still get into a good program ... good luck

thank you for the replies i have been advised by the clerkship program coordinator at Mayo not to apply as it could lead to dejection and wastage of money....that was quite expected i am just thinking how to get the valueable US clinical experience with this score........ i was earlier thinking my publications and conference presentations would be a big plus but with a score like this, i dont know how far my dreams of an academic internal medicine program can be pursued can other scores and other academic activities really compensate for a low step 1 score ? ive heard that most good programs have a cutoff like 82 or 85 below which they dont even read the whole application.....is this true ? Do u people think may be i should apply Family Medicine for an year and then reapply to Internal Medicine after an year ? would i even get that ?

oh u mean Preliminary Medicine i guess, is that going to be easier for my status ? i thought prelim medicine is only available for people who would subsequently get into Radio etc with that one year of clinical experience, would i be managing a categorical easily /? first of all, is prelim medicine year easier to get ? i'll be thankful for advice

There are many other programs that dont look at ur step1 score and u DONT have to show them either. Like Baylor, Northwestern, Louisvelle, Yale and many more, can also try UT at Galveston. Good Luck if you have the money u can get great USCE at Cornell and Harvard
