hello, i am new here.
i am a medical graduate from china who wants to take USMLE in the following years.
should i apply for a phd program in a american medical school first?
but i am quite worried about my graduatation year limitation. the phd programs need at least 5years.
i am looking forward to your feedbacks.

If you need to take the USMLE for residency, then concentrate on it and take it ASAP. the earlier, the better. No phd need for that.

many many thanks!!
i know i can take step1 & step2 ck at home, but the step2 CS visa entry is another problem. most of the time it will be refused.
i mean should i come usa first? that,s why i apply for a phd as well.
anyone can share some lights?
thanks in advance!!smiling facesmiling face

leecabg,

r u currently in china now? u r absolutely right.. most chinese don bother applying for cs when they r in china for the fear of visa denial. i dont know the letter imposed by ecfmg has any effects on getting a visa stamped for cs exam.

if u do choose to take phd prog, then not only u r facing the long 5 years but also will be placed as an 'old med grad' criteria which would refrain your match application process. so the best is to do post-doc or mph.

Nobody can be sure that he will be issued a visa for the states. it depends on the representative's mood at the embassy, but also on some undertable politics. Just try; convince them that you'll go back to china after your exam and make sure you provide documented proof of that.

but is it possible to do a post doc or mph without doc? and if possible, generally how long will it take and is USMLE mandatory for these application?

thanks

many many thanks!! i will come to the states soon.
since you are a medical degree holder(verified as US MD equivalent), you are eligible for post-doc fellowship.
it is better to take usmle within 5 years after your graduation, otherwise you will be termed as "old medical graduate".
visa is also a problem in residency application. most chinese medical graduates who entered us residency programs are GC holders but not J1 visa, i do not know the reason why they can not get J1 visa.
most of them are away from medical school for years.
