How hard is to get into 1-year preliminary residency? Compare to catergorical?

Is a Greencard a must? Will there be any negative effect on Match later on?
I am thinking to apply for preliminary position in a hospital in order to get USCE and recommendation letters.

Is this idea feasible?

Thanks a lot

I guess it is easier than categorical, since both the programs who contacted me where about the preliminary not the categorical.

green card is a great addition but may be it is not necessary
I hope someone will release an official figure for the people going to the match this year what are there score and credentials.
last year figures are on eras website but nothing about coming competition

Sometimes it is hard to say if it is easier or harder, because people who applying for prelim are usually continue with some specialty next year (like neuro, ENT, ophto etc) and they do usually have pretty high credentials. So when you apply for the prelim or transitional, you are compeating with those people for a spot. Well, you will have a license after completing an internship, but you can work only in a few places, unless you complete full residency later.

and I don't think that green card is a must... but like I said before, you are copeating with many AMG, who do not need any visa...

The prelim spot is much harder to get than the Categorical. The reason is that you are competing with those who continue their training in Neuro, Dermo, Radiology etc. You can tell when you look at , for instance, a less-favorite community program who has almost all IMG in the Categorical but almost all AMG in the prelim.

most prelim programs prefer candidates who have something planned for the following year i.e derm, neuro, ophto etc . yet again there are alot of programs of not so high a repute and AMGs dont even apply there e.g an AMG going into anesthesia or ophtho is less likely to apply to a small community program for prelim cuz they can get into bigger community or university programs so if ur an IMG, its better to apply to smaller community programs for prelim ... if u get prelim and apply next year for categorical u might get a pgy2 position. even if u dont, u'll have 1 year of the best USCE there is !! and all the US LoRs that u'll need ...
