Theophylline is known primarily for its bronchodilatory effects but it also causes a stimulation of the central nervous system, an increase in heart rate and of the myocardial force of contraction, an increase in gastric acid output, the release of catecholamines from the adrenal medulla, and diuresis. Theophylline is a competitive agonist of adenosine; its exact mechanism of action is not clearly defined.
