hmm... the most common causative factor for carcinomas of the thyroid is'radiation' to the head and neck areas. diffuse simple goitre poses no risk for developing cancer... but multinodular goitre has 8 to 10% risk for developing into follicular carcinoma of the thyroid... ...hashimoto's thyroiditis is another condition that can predispose to thyroid carcinoma...just thought i might add.

but it seems it has less chances to turn malignant...i.e rarely it does.
