Kaplan Qbank USMLE

Hello all,

Today it begins, when I take on the mighty step 1. I will take my exam late June 2007 and go to an American medical school in the northeast.

I want to extend my heartfelt hand of encouragement to those in a similar boat. Life has been a difficult struggle thus far, with a unique mountain ahead. I hope we can all be friends, share our feelings on life, wisdom, and intelligence while we embark on this journey.

I will be copying my posts here to a blog I made. In this blog, and here too, I guess, I'll talk about interesting things I've learned; perhaps talking about it will make it more applicable/remembrable.

So, my next post will be the books I shall amass and what I plan to do in the coming Thanksgiving break. Please do respond, I do love the interaction, and your suggestions as well.

Whether God exists or not, I do not know. Sometimes spending so much time makes me certain he does not, nor did he ever. But regardless, I ask us all to live prodigous, exemplary, righteous lives, either for God, but most importantly, for ourselves, so when we get to the top, we can look at our unblemished path and untarnished history with great pride.

My booklist consists of the entire Kaplan lecture note series (that I bought used), BRS physio, path, anatomy, embryo, neuro, lippincott biochem, micro made ridiculously simple, katzung pharm review + pharm flashcards by brs, robbins review of pathology, pathophys for the boards and wards, and Rubin's pathology review

I know this is a lot, but many of these will be used concurrently with coursework (Rubin's and Katzung).

This Thanksgiving, I plan to knock out the Physiology book by Kaplan so during crunch month, I can rely solely on BRS physio as my review. Also, I will review Kaplan's biochem since I've heard lippincott is much better and should be used for review during that month as well.

I also plan to get the BSS series, and will allocate 15 days during the last month and a half of prep since it seems to really help when done before the boards. I have eight months to prepare; in my med school people don't hit their review hard till after classes end. It is about 45 days from then till the exam. 15 days will be for BSS, leaving thirty days left, which is about what most people take in my school.

Those 30 days will then be split according to my strengths and weaknesses.

Also, QBank will be used heavily then; for now, I signed up for USMLERX and plan to finish those questions by doing 50-100 a day till the study-marathon starts.

I must also listen to Goljan's lectures and look at his high yield notes not too soon before the exam. And also read usmle secrets and do the NMS questions.

I know this is a lot, but I really hope I can do it all by putting in one hour a day during the week when I have class and maybe 1.5-2 hrs on weekends while spending all day during breaks (thanksgiving, christmas, spring) studying this stuff. Eight months in this fashion should be sufficient to get this large list done, I hope.

Iwas quite imressed with your organising capabilities.
would like to correspond with you on a regular basis.
i am IMG planning to sit step 1 in 2008. Am doing anatomy from RSsnell(text book). Am waiting for my kaplan notes and qbank. where do you suggest I review the anat after doing it from text book. is usmlerx good? which course have u subscribed-1/2 or 3 months?

i've been working off four hours of sleep daily, and am finding myself too tired to post on this regulary.

i'm reorganizing everything so i sleep more and keep up with this; looking back on what i've done helps motivate to keep going

my booklist changed slightly as I've found which resources work better (people who scored extremely high all seemed to use BSS series)

gursuchi; are you taking anatomy as a class? if so, i found BRS Anatomy to be the most comprehensive. in terms of coursework, BRS is generally the most detailed and your best bet. For review, i think BRS physio and BRS path are most useful.

i am doing both qbank and usmlerx along with classwork (i'm an MS2 and we are going organ-based now until may when class ends)
i heard USMLEWorld is good too, and will get that too. These sources help let me know what holes exist in teaching and what I need to fill in with self-study since classes are not always completely thorough.

also; gursuchi; i got special deals for usmlerx and kaplan since representatives came to my school to promote them; I have them till August; i'm taking my exam July.

I received a stack of DVD's of material. among them are the recorded kaplan lectures.

i am listening to these DVD's while going through the material in the syllabus, and it is much better than just sitting and reading; it does wonders in listening to the material presented in a different way. i wish our medical school lectures were organized this clearly.

if anyone else is also using kaplan recorded lectures, please note an error in the biochem (i believe third tape). he states that the 10nm beads on a string is euchromatin, whereas 30nm compacted with H1 protein is heterochromatin. most other resources state that 30nm chromatin is euchromatin as well. as a matter of fact, i've found that 90% of euchromatin is actually 30nm, which is easily converted to 10nm where nucleosomes can separate the DNA for processing. heterochromatin is for higher than 30nm chromatin degree of packing.

guruschi i will send you a PM shortly as to your proposition
