Ok guys, I am the oldest member of prep4usmle. Some of you remember “The Biggest Looser of 2006 Match” contests from last year. I was a winner. This year I sent 108 applications and as of today I received 22 rejections.
Yesterday I got prematch in FP.
Never give-up guys. I am an old graduate, out of practice for few years, with low scores and multiple attempts. If I got residency position, all of you will get, sooner or later. It was a pleasure to be a part of this forum.

Hello Everyone,
I need help. Let me explain my situation:
Graduated 1992
Failed step 1 1996
Passed step 2-77, 1996
Did public health residency in home country
Took step 1 May 2007-84
step 2 CS june 2007-passed
step 2 CK July 2007-87
No USCE
3 US LORs
Presently top research position in the US
About 11 publications, many oral presentations
Previous WHO grant
Applying for Internal medicine residency, what are my chances? Please advise.

  #20

Sheesh. Had to dig deep into the archives to pull this one out, huh ? Personally, I think you have great credentials. What REAL program directors should see is that you have been ACTIVE in the medical community since graduation. Im sure you'll get a great spot in Internal Medicine. Just keep the dream alive, and apply to as many places as your wallet/purse can afford. Good luck.

If we say don't apply because you have no chances, will you listen? Of course not, so go ahead. You are definitely not their typical applicant, so the first measure to address this is to apply to as many programs as possible (and read their criteria and be selective). I personally believe that there is a chance for those whose CVs between graduation and present time are full with things, not necessarily clinical.

Caveat! This comes from not-your-typical applicant as well. My brilliant profile: graduated 1991 (beat you!), internship, residency, practice in Family Medicine until 2001. MPH in USA, did research in cancer prevention and control since 2001, CDC, NIH grants. Step 1 211/87 second attempt, Step 2 will take in a month, CS waiting. To energize my life a little, I am going to apply this season. In addition to my "I have nothing to lose" phylosohpy, I also have some -shall I say- signals from a couple of programs that they would at least open my application even if their screen would not otherwise let me in.smiling face

My heartiest congratulations to you.

Hat off to "Cadp" and "Not my strength"! We are in same boat. Your spirits realy inspire me!
My profile
Oldies in early 1990's.
Step1 90 (2 att), Step2CK 86, CS passed.
>5 years clinical experience in home country
>5 years medical research experience in America
>5 first auther paper in high impact journals
Some America nationwide awards.
3 LORs from American doctors.
I agree with "Cadp" that if the program does not tightly close door to me with thread of graduation year and score cutoff, I'll go for it.

Best luck to all of us! Let's keep each other posted!

  #24

Let then this be our thread. Or maybe we should rename it "incurrable optimism".wink
