Hi!
I would like to say that I´m doing ok but right now I´m shocked. 1400 pages! How did my friend told me that the one that they are sending me has 500 pages? Are the 4 volumes arround 1400? how I´m going to make it? Oh boy! I´m really scared! How many pages do you study per day? Well, I better think in something else now because otherways I´ll have a nightmare.
Have a great x-mas!
Please, if you could tell me all number of pages of the rest of the volumes... That way I can think how I can make it work.
Gracias por todo. y animo y al toro!
un abrazo!

It´s on its way ( my friends mailed it to me) but it´s taking too long. We are colling the post office but we can´t get to know anything. how do you get to help in a operation? I have to be honest. I don´t like the one you are doing next day but it´s always a good change. I´ve seen a lot of inguinal sections. they are hard to understand if you don´t see them very well. jajjaja
Well, I will let you know if I got my "gost" book.
Me alegra un monton saber de ti.
Un abrazo, babe!

Hi Amaia, i will write in english , but i´m spanish too, my name is Nacho i´ve just taken step 1 and 2 in november, i did them both in the same week, did not have much time to study, I took three weeks in holidays and it was enough, I´m a resident in Hospital 12 octubre in my third year in medical oncology, so i still have fresh in my mind knowledge from our MIR, I only needed 5 days to study for step 2 and i used most of the left time ,15 days, for step 1, i got 92 in step 2 and 90 in step 1, so i do not think you will have to worry about it, i´m sure you guys will pass the exam and get great scores, it´s really easy to pass and i think it is just a question of getting good scores, do not be very worried about the materials, i did not use any for step 2, just had a look at some stuff i´m not used to manage in my residency, such as obstetrics, pediatrics and psychiatrics, and for step 1 i used sme books from kaplan a friend of mine lent me, i studied anatomy, biochemistry, genetics, microbiology, pharmacology, behavioural and inmunology, and did not study anything about phisiology, pathology....so good luck and i hope you will let me know how are you doing. Best regards

Hi Nacho!
I´m really glad you wrote me. It meens so much to me! you are the first person that I know from spain that have done the exam.
I´m studying for step 1. But I´m a bit lost.
You must know that you already know more things than me, because you have than the MIR and you are a resident of 3rd grade. You don´t need to study as much as me.
I´m just graduated from university. I´m not studying for the mIR. I just started to study for the step 1 and I´m a bit lost. They explain so many details that I don´t know if I should study all of them or just have a general idea.
Now I´m studying biochemistry. Do I have to know all the pathways and all the strucures of lipids, carbohydrates, amino acids.... ( I hope theanswer is no) because I can´t memorize all this.
Could you give me some instructions about how should I study? what kind of questions are asked in the exam?
about anatomy, microbiology, pharmacology... what is importante and which details should I study?
I will be really thank to you if you could help me.
If you prefer to write me in spanish you can do it to:
amayis01@yahoo.es
I hope to hear from you soon.
I really need an advice.
Thank you for your help!

Hi amaia i´read your message and you are right it´s probably easier if you have taken the MIR before, but that is only certain for step2, for step 1 i had to study lot of things we were not supposed to study for the MIR, and believe me, it´s not that hard, of course there are some things you will have to memorize, but the most important thing is always the same, try to understand everything and just memorize the less, and always using nmotechnical rules so you can quickly have access to the information needed during the exam.
It is of great importance to know the "enemy", you must take a lot of questions, in biochemistry they usually ask the same things i only studied the hydrocarbonated and lipid metabolism, i did not study anything about proteins (i know this do not mean anything, since every exam is different), by doing questions you will learn which things are important and which not, just trust you. Kaplan books are fine, i used that. Learn the important pathways, but you do not need to memorize every single product and which one comes next, i did not do it and they did not ask me that in the exam, know general concepts and the important regulatory enzimes. In general, for both steps, try to study learning the differences between things that look rather the same. Good luck, when are you planning to take the exams?

hi nacho!
thanks for answering so fast. So may be I should buy a book of questions, should I?
That wayI can see what is importante and what it isn´t.
I´m thinking of doing the exam between June and August. Did you do the exams in Madrid? Where is it located?
Today I had a look of molecular biology ( DNA, RNA...) I think we don´t have to know all the details because I don´t know how can they ask this.
Tomorrow I will start with cell biology. do you have any advice for this?
by the way, when are you doing step 3 and where do you wanna go in the USA? any speciality you want to do? any plan?
Thanks for your help.

Hi Amaia jajaj lot of questions!! Well, at least they are not multiple choice questions!!!. First, in Madrid the exam takes place i CEES university, it is placed in Villaviciosa de Odón, and you can easily get there by bus,the ride takes nearly 45 min, you can take the bus at Principe Pío station ( it is near plaza de España), there are buses every 10 min, so not problem at all, the exam starts at nine and you have to be there half an hour before. As i told you i took both exams in a rush jajaj, so actually i did not study any cell biology, but for genetics i reviewed general concepts such as different types of mutation:missense,in-frame,...;Hardy-Weinberg principles, robertsonian translocations,... Yeah, i think it is definitely quite important to have Q-books, what i did was taking questions in advance (before those three weeks i told you i used to prepare the exams full-time) and by the time i got to study i knew exactly what i had to study so i only studied those subjects i did worse in the question books from kaplan , that was my strategy because i was short of time, i´m a resident already as you know and i could not spend more time than those 3 weeks for both exams Currently i´m not plannig to take step 3 as you don´t need it unless you wanna go there definitely, i will take CSA probably in May since i will probably go to the American Congress of medical oncology in Orlando, i will save some money doing the exam by then. I still have not make up my mind about where i wanna go, Danna Farber in Boston would be great if i plan to take a fellowship in oncology, if i finally decide to do three years of internal medicine and after that the fellowship in oncology, i will probably go to wherever i´m accepted in IM, but definitely my interests are in oncology it really fascinates me, i was lucky and got great number in MIR and there is no reason to change my mind now. Why do you wanna go straight to the states without taking MIR? You are really brave and have things clear in your mind i guess. Specialize in?

Hi Nacho!
Well, I´m not sure I´m brave. I take lot of time taking decissions. I´ve been near Seattle for 3 summer and I really like the life and people there.
I always liked traveling abroad and I always wanted to study there.
I think that if I don´t try now, I will never do it.
I´m not sure if I will do the MIR in 2006 just to see what happens. ( or in case I´m not admited in an american hospital). do you think I should take the MIR in 2006? It doesn´t cost too much money so I guess I can do it.
About the exam, I´m still waiting for the confirmation of the ECFMG. after I got it ( which I hope will arrive soon...) should I call to prometics? or should I wait till I´m sure when I´m doing the exam? Can we do the exams all the weeks? are they on thursday? If I decide to change the date of my exam ( inside the 3 months I choose) do I have to pay something or how does it go?
well, I´m seeing that I did a lot of questions so I wil stop writting for today.
Oh man! you are being such a big help for me! Thanks for all your attention.
Hope to hear from you soon.
amaia
