Hi there!

I’m an IMG from Barcelona, Spain, living in California. I did my residency in Hematology and Hemotherapy in Spain and after that I came to the US in 1998 to work on cancer research, but never got into the clinical practice here. I miss it so I decided to give it a try. So here I am, getting ready for a marathon for step 1.

I’ve heard great things about the Kaplan live lectures notes.

Can anybody give me a clue on how or where to get a copy of them without attending the lectures?

One more thing: is anybody from Spain out there going for the ECFMG?

Thanks and good luck to everyone!

Hola!

Estoy algo desconcertado..

Gracias y hasta pronto!

Did you know?
Cant (noun)
1. Clichéd talk: boring talk filled with clichés and platitudes.
2. hypocritical talk: insincere talk, especially where morals and religion are concerned

Try using an apostrophe next time.

hi amaia, yes they seid me that with Kaplan Medical USMLE Step 1 Home study program and other for complement it that was enough, and of course a lot of QUESTION like Qbanks etc. but they seid that the Clave is first review all theses books and afther that question question and more question, I´m studing per step so I´m reading all that would be 4 month aproximatly and then only test test and test. Of course I will take more time because I need more vocabulary and review many words but it is interesting. I was looking where there are Prometric system and may be I will take it in Gineve-Swirtland. Now I am waiting for the right material that will arrive fron EEUU the Kaplan Medical USMLE step 1 home study program and other First Aid, and High Yelds, until that I study hier with diferent books and Pre test for to catch la onda de diferentes palabras, jajajaj no puedo con mi impulso jajajaja. Ok let me know if you have more information about application for the step 1. I hope to hear from you again.

Hey Doctorasso!
Thanks for your reply! It´s the first time someone reply me. I would love to write you in spanish, but they say we should write in englsih.
I was thinking of buying the Kaplan Home study program and the first Aid for step 1. Do you really think that would be enough? Or should I buy some more for just questions?
How do you buy them, online? Is that save? do you really get the books?
Did you already apply for ECFMG? What do we have to send them? And when we apply, do we have to tell them when we want to do all the exams?
To do the residency in the USA we have to pass step 1 , 2 ( with CK and CS) and step , don´t we? And how do you know how much time do you need to prepear for each of them?
I would really thank you if you could answer me again.
Un abrazo!
hasta pronto!

Hi amaia, your welcome, I know what you mind about "Spanish" but I think that we must to do it, It isn´t difficult but no at all easy too. Did you read on Web the page of ECFMG? if you didn´t you must to do it, I did it but I couldn´t undestand all I will read it again and I will see. Yes I will apply because without stimuli(Presion del tiempo) It is a litte bit lasy(en sentido figurado). I obtained these books through Ebay they are "second Hand" (Kaplan Home study and the rest). Look It is posible, It is possible we must to do it and we are going to do it. But the shipping is terrible from there to hier in Viena, It was better buy directly from Kaplan new because I am spending the same money or more for this shipping because they are so weight(?). do you have some other information about the application to ECFMG?? Let me know if you have more data.
the time is minimum 10 hours per day, for each step 3-4 month(or more depende your fluently English)
Saludos desde Viena.

Hi Doctorasso!
So you are taking 3-4 months to study for them. I was thinking of taking 6 months for each one. I don´t know if it is too much or not but I prefer to be too much than too less. about our english. I heard we have to pass the TOEFL exam. I´m thinking of taking it in January. It doesn´t seam to be very difficult.
To buy new books directly from kaplan, do we have to do it online, or is it any kaplan book store in europe ( hoepfully in spain) to call and ask for them?
I read the ECFMG information (almost everything). I think we have to send them this:
1. two copies of the medical dilpome and its translation in english ( it has to be official)
2. two all face pictures
3. two copies of our final medical transcrips with its translation in english ( official)
4. another two full face pictures.

I also think we have to tell them the bank account number so they can charge it there. I will look and read it again to see if I´m correct.

well, if I get to know something new I will write you! keep in touch!

Un besazo!

Hi, thank for this information. I know what you mind about English, it´s true, ahhhh Now TOEFL is not necesary, if you want you could take it,but I know that now it is not neccesay. (I will read more about it) About kaplan in Europa yes there is in Spain, but I wanted to do like you, I thought to buy from them but a friend that he is living in Madrid said me that they have all the programs Kaplan but they can´t sell these books (Home study) you must to buy it from USA directly,( but if you have friend in Madrid contact them and say them that ask it for you) this was the reason that I bought these books from USA through Ebay, but now for me (at the end) it is expensive(second hand books I mind). This guys that are aproving the steps said me that at begining you have two way: prepare USMLE by yourself more cheaper or take course like Kaplan programs, and both of them choced the first and they are passing. why dont you take kaplan in Spain-Madrid?. I m looking here where must/could to translate my papier because the proces is long later. Let me know what you will do.
un Abrazo al estilo Imperial Austro-Ungaro jajaja
take care

hola doctorasso!
I read the ECFMG information last night and I realize the same as you told me last mail. We don´t have to take the TOEFL exam. So I think I won´t do it for now.
About why I am not joining kaplan program in Madrid... Well, I live in the north of spain ( 5 hours far from Madrid) so if I have to take that course, I will have to rent a house and then pay the course, which would be really expensive.
So I will try to buy the home study one by mail. How long will it take to get them? should I buy them before or after getting the accept confirmation from ECFMG?
I have friends in the USA that whould come here to my town in january or february, but I can´t wait till they are coming, I guess.
I think we don´t have to apply for all the steps at the same time. I wanna say that we can apply for the first one now, and after we pass it, we can apply for the step2. Do you know something about it?
and about step 3... I heard we don´t have to pass it right now. If we have to do it, we wuold be able to do it later.
I read that we first apply for a period of 3 moth time we want to do the exam. like may-june-july...or june-july-august... then I guess we will have to ask for the exact day. Do you know if I´m write?
well, Hope to hear from you soon.
Un abrazo!

Hi chicoca, yes you are right about the steps, I think that is better step by step, you now, one step each time. Check kaplan on internet and you will know excactly how much these books will cost you, if you don´t have time until next year(Jannuary) check it and think about it (pro-contras). I think that you can do two thing at same time, so buy these books (first aid too) and apply to ECFMG; than take the descicion of which period, all depend how long do you think to prepare each step, but I think that is good keep that in mind (these period for the next year, It is good). Do you know how long is the process till to have a an answer(green light) from ECFMG??? I heard about 6 months but I´m not sure. if you have more information about it let me know please. in other hand only are necesary pass step 1-2-CS, only that, step 3 you can take it latter; you will can take it during your formation in USA, no problem, now we must to concentrate in pass these three levels. Best wishes. take care
un abrazo grande

Hey doctorasso! I hear that you can get the answer from the ECFMG more faster than 6 months. I think that it can take 10 days till day get your information to they send back their answer. So you would have to add it to how long it would take to send the information and the same time to get it back. But I think that 6 months is too much. I was thinking of sending the information before x-mas and then apply for step 1 for the period of June-July-august or may be sooner like may-june-july. What do you think about it?
Probably you are right telling me that I should order the bookes before getting the answer from ECFMG. It could take a bit long getting them.
If I get to now more information I will write you next week ( I´ll be out for the weekend).
Besos y abrazos... con todos los brazos!!!

thanks doctorasso,
I had a great weekend. Today I asked for my diplome to send to ECFMG. But I have to translate it. did you have to do that? Did you do it i the consulate? I know it has to be official but may be I can do it somewhere else. So, I understand you are already studying for the step 1. which book are you using right now? I´m thinking of asking the on-line as fast I have sent all the certifications to ECFMG. Do you think I´m doing it ok? or should I wait till I get their confirmation? Beacuse I don´t want to waist money.
How long can it take to get the books? 2 weeks, a month, 3 months?
When I´m sending the certifications to the program, do I have to apply the dates for the exams? or do we do that later? I understand like we have to do it when we first send all the diplomes and things to them.
Well, I better get going now.
una abrazo muy fuerte y animo!
amaia
