Hello,

I have a question about entering the residency program. I got my MD. from China in 1992. My major is preventive medicine. I worked in the Department of Preventive Medicine in our University before I came here. So I did not have any clinical experiences. I think I am eligible for takeing the USMLEs. My question is if I pass the USMLEs, do you think I have a chance to be matched into any residency program. Because I noticed most programs require clinical experiences. If you think I could apply for the residency programs, which specialties do you think I could apply. You reply will be highly appreciated. Thank you very much!

1. everybody has chances. the issue here is the %. you can try to increase ur % in many ways but you will surely need a good answer to the following question: what did you do since your graduation. believe me, if you do give an appropriate answer to that question in your application and at the interview (expect that question in all ur futur interview), you application will suffer a lot.

2. you don't need to pass the USMLE; you need to get 90s scores. Most progs have cutoff graduation years between 2 to 5 years so you can't apply to them coz they tend to stick on this criteria. The bad news is even the prog that do not have cut off grad year look at it and prefer fresher applicants. but the good news is the consider the whole application, so if you have great scores, good USlor, USCE, a good and coherent application. You will make it.

3. if you only have prev med experience, its better than nothing.

4. difficult to tell the speciality that could welcome you. all are getting very very competitive. family practice was considered a back up prog till last year and this year, it became a competitive specialty, and most prog require one year USCE. So its difficult to say. many applicants applied this year to IM, peds and FP coz they tought them less competitive and as of today, many are without interview. My advice, find the specialty you like , learn how to be a competitive applicant for it and do your best
