You are going up to a 20,000 feet mountain-what medication might the M.D. prescribe and briefly why?

acetozolamide ......to prevent resp alkalosis, caused by hyperventilation.

dexamethasone can also be prescribed.

Whats ur answer ?

Acetazolamide will offset the respiratory alk. cause by hyperventilation by producing a mild metabolic acidosis- inhibiting HCO3 absorption and increasing HCO3 excretion

I cant comment on the dexamethasone

I read that dexamethasone can also be given from CMDT.

Here is a little abstract in the New England Journal of Medicine on Dexamethasone and acute mountain sickness. I think it will help answer your question. http://content.nejm.org/cgi/content/abstract/321/...
