hello all ive been delaying writing my experience in the hope that i feel better about my exam and have some positive stuff to contribute. we all know that it is indeed a time pressured exam. i did complete my qs coz thats how i time myself in any exam. usually i've always been pretty quick..but this exam was certainly a tester. hence i think the most important thing wud be to think of a few suggestions which wud help u with the exam. REVISe ur physical examination findings INTENSIVELY. know where a given physical sign is leading u to. not just murmurs. everything about the cardiac exam. eg how to d/dt viral myocarditis from acute pericaarditis using a combo of physical signs, x rays and ecg. yes ppl i was tested atleast twice on thta. and frankly speaking didnt know it fluently. oops guys i have to run now. will come back and write the remaining suggetsions. GL

I was waiting for your exam experiences.I hope that you will come up with your detailed version shortly.Do discuss in more detail about physical finding stuffs.Kap Medicine enough for that or do we have to run for other physical diagnosis books ? How would you compare exam questions with Kap Qbook - conceptwise, contentwise ?

thanx a lot guys..sorry i had disappeared again due to a millionm reasons. let me come straight to the exam. there were loads of qs based on physical exam findings, and epidemio...in the sense the former wud help u narrow down ur answers to a few differentials, and then ud have to answer based on what wud be the most likely dx. i dont think kaplan medicine deals with physical findings in detail so that is not comprehensive enuff. the qs are long and boring bUT READ EVERY SINGLE statement. the range of options DO NOT help. for eg there was a q about an elderly with waning levels of consciousness and some problem with urination. ( cant remeber which) and fever. IN The midst of a huge question. there were loads of psyche options given as differentials. now in elderly i remember a consultant of mine had especially stressed that infection may manifest as mental status changes so i was looking for UTI/infection etc. the answer i picked was'delirium' only, in a list of around 20 psyche options with other types of delirium. so if u went hru the q superficially, and missed out on the word fever inthat giant q, u wud have probably gone for the psyche options. i had around 5- 6 ecgs and quite a few radiographs. and unfortunately the qs werent the sort where u cud guess what the answer was by reading the q stem. the ethics qs were..err different. eg some guy who's refuses mechanical ventilation, and his family members agree as well. u wil scroll down the options looking frantically to respect his wishes. but ALLL options put him on the vent. i ended up going for the hospital ethics comittee in a few simialr scenarios. (even though i wud normally consider it "the wrong answer generalaly provided'. i wud suggest going thru dr dteve daughterty's lectures in step 1 on ethics right before the exam. luckily ethical qs on pregnancy, marriage etc were not asked ( according to kaplan pregnancy duZ NOT emancipate. Uw says it duz) i had less of step 1 stuff asked. hardly any pharma. kaplan q book qs are much easier, concept and content wise. however i still feel they helped me as i did my readings. to be honest i cant compare the qs to any other q format, not uw, not even the usmle cd. well in the end people, i wud suggest u go over physical exam findings thorougly. and know more than one way of distinguishing two closely related conditions. usually when i studied i used to think of how to differentiate a given condition from the other. ..a sort of a mental pathway. in the exam however, they did not provide u all the details. hence i chose the answer based on what is more likely. dont try to memorise incidence/ prevalence etc ..thats impossible..but when u study, try to make a mental note of whether something is rare or not. content wise i d say surgery was asked less frequently than the remaining 4 subjects. Time i repeat is a major factor. make sure ure well rested before the exam or else the 9 hrs are bound to drain u . Good luck and hope for the best.

"i dont think kaplan medicine deals with physical findings in detail so that is not comprehensive enuff. "-------------I have been studying only kaplan n UW. So, do u think UW makes up 4 the info on physical findings, that u were refering to. "i had around 5- 6 ecgs and quite a few radiographs. and unfortunately the qs werent the sort where u cud guess what the answer was by reading the q stem"---------------------ecg's reg wht arrythmias/heart conditions??. Other than those ecg's in kaplan, wht other topics , do u think one should go thro bfore exam. Same doubt regarding X-rays and CT. Thanks in advance ! GL !

i did UW and finished my q bank pretty close to the exam. yet i didnt think it was sufficient. frankly speaking i really dunno what to suggest as a source. its like u r reading a detailed history and physical work-up of a pt in the ward.but unfortunately in bvery limited time ....so if ure a freshly going thru ur clinical rotations, it helps. as forr adiology, musculoskeletal radiology is important. i didnt get any Cts, just x rays ..but i remember geting cts in step 1 so they wont be totally irrelevant i guess. i hope ive answered all the qs. thanx a lot for ur prayers. GL
