hi Everyone!

I am d new kid in town,..quite literally.

I need some information regarding this program : Maimonides (IM)

in New York. I got an invitation from it, but I do not know whether it is a good program, especially since it is located in Brooklyn.

Does anybody know?

Thanks a lot

"especially since it is located in Brooklyn"?

Oh, I heard that brooklyn programs are not very good from some people I know and that it is not a safe place to live too: I am new to US and so have no idea but to hear all opinions. Is it true?

ok, NewKidInTown...location doesn't have much to do with the quality of the program since I could give you examples of bad programs in Manhattan and good programs in Brooklyn. On the other hand, location has a lot to do with safety. Now you need to remember that when you say Manhattan or Brooklyn, you are talking about real cities, so you need to be much more specific in terms of location (i.e., neighborhood) because, for instance, even after all those Giuliani years, Harlem is still an unsafe neighborhood (at night). And Harlem is in Manhattan. On the other hand, if we talk about Brooklyn, it is one thing to live in, let's say Canarsie, and a totally different thing to live and work downtown Brooklyn (which is not only very safe, but you might not be even able to afford). I don't know if I made myself very clear; bottomline is location does not reflect on the quality of a program, but much more on the safety of that neighborhood. And when you're gonna live in NYC (regardless of what borough you might be living in), you're gonna realize that EVERYTHING here that involves costs of living has to do with location, location, location!

good program. they have couple of fellowships. Planning to open nephroology in few years. IMG friendly. provide accomodation.

Thanks all..esp gd11 and dev. I am glad to know its a good program, coz I had earlier received a call from St. Barnabas and was unanimously told that it is the "scum of the world" program. I dont know if this is true or not.

About accomodation, do we ask the PC to arrange for that or does she do it herself? My interview call just has dates mentioned, nothing else. What to do? any suggestions?

  #10

no i meant during ur residency. they provide apts

  #11

Oh.
Guess I have a lot to learn in reading between lines.
Thanks dev again.
Do you know anything about the interviews they conduct?

SUNY, for instance, is supposedly a good program in a not-that-good neighborhood as opposed to Maimonides that is in the heavily Hassidic (read safe) neighborhood of Borough Park

but is maimonides good? or is it equivalent to what I heard about St. Barnabas? I am sorry for so many questions, but I remember what people told me when I happily told them about my St. Barnabas iv call. I was so excited since it was my first call and then was really saddened whe I heard rather nasty things about the program. So am kind of over-cautious at this point. Dont want to once again tell people that I have a new iv only to be told that it is a "useless" program: especially from people who do not appreciate the hardships some of us face in getting even a single interview.

Maimonides is much better than St Barnabas, but is not NYU. Maimonides is a major teaching hospital in Brooklyn (along with SUNY).

thanks gd11. You seem to be a citizen in the US, or atleast living here for long, long time.
I appreciate your help.

I've been living in NYC for quite a while now and am very familiar with the city (except the Bronx where, I must admit, I've never been yet).

  #17

any place with in-house fellowships is good if you are considering one later on...
