Did the oais trick and it says that: our records indicate you have already passed Step 2 CS... etc... etc...

I've been a forum absentee for awhile, trying to juggle the USMLE, my hubby, and my baby. After the birth of my child, I had been absent from the forum, but that doesn't mean that I have forgotten all of the lovely people in this forum.

I took my CS in Aug 30. Took a 5-day course, then did some reading for a week, then took the exam. The good thing about the course is you could do the simulation exam of 12 patients, complete with instruments, inside an actual clinic. I did the knocking, the draping, the washing, the greeting (using their last name) and the eye contact. I did not shake hands since I was told during the course that it's optional, and I prefer not to (just in case he's in pain or he's coughing and there's supposed to be blood in his hands).

Once you're told that Patient Encounter begins now... Spending a good one minute outside the door is very important in writing down important data from the door. And remember PAMHUGSFOSS before knocking and entering the room. It also helped a lot that I wrote down what differentials I had in mind from the info on the door, which guided me with the questions I asked and the PE that I did.

After the CS course, I actually wrote down my own script to follow and read it a lot of times before going into the actual CS.

I thought I was all set to go, but once I entered the room, I did some blunders such as: forgetting to pull out bed extension for the feet when I asked the patient to lie down, and apologized for it when I noticed that her legs were dangling from the bed (oops). Didn't finish my neuro exam with one patient, but finished it with the next patient who was also a neuro case.

I did remember to summarize my findings and discuss them with my SP, and what I'd like to do next, and asked if he/she had any questions. I also assured them that we'll do the best that we can to help the patient and touched him/her on the shoulder.

The SPs didn't readily give information (which was expected), so I had to keep asking questions and digging more (which they expected us to do). I got all kinds of cases except a Phone case.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask me.

"Didn't finish my neuro exam with one patient, but finished it with the next patient who was also a neuro case. "

I meant to say: Didn't finish my neuro exam with one patient, but finished it with the next neuro case.

hi bm,

Are you talking about the Kaplan 5d course? Did it really help you? Do you recommend it?

Thanks bm

catm04,

When is your exam? Mine is on Nov 07 in Houston.

I'm now in Palo Alto for 5 day Kaplan CS course.

If you also take it, we can discuss. I'm an IMG.

To everyone,

Yes, I did the Kaplan course. I also studied the cases in USMLE world. The simulated exam in the course helped me acclimate myself to the actual CS.

hi bm,do u think we have to do the routine examination of all the systems in every case ??and can u share any unusual cases...and if u have any idea about assault on a woman ....plz share the info on how to proceed for such a case ...

You do not have to check all the systems; you will run out of time.
