OK! I'm going to start a new thread in which I want us to post all those things that some remarcable people discovered that are carracteristic to some disease and also make our life a living Hell! sticking out tongue They are also buzzwords and knowing those we can easyly diagnose certain disease just like that. If you don't know how to explain this you can go here and copy->paste it (that's what I did).

I'm going to start with 2:

Kernig's sign
A clinical hallmark of meningitis, inflammation of the meninges, the membranes covering the brain and spinal cord.
The test for Kernig sign is done by having the person lie supine (flat on the back), flex the thigh so that it is at a right angle to the trunk, and completely extend the leg at the knee joint. If the leg cannot be completely extended due to pain, this is Kernig sign.

Brudzinsky's sign
Brudzinski’s neck sign. Brudzinski actually describedseveral different signs in patients with meningitis.Brudzinski’s neck sign is most commonly recognized
and is often simply referred to as Brudzinski’s sign. With the patient supine, the physician places one hand behind the patient’s head and places the other
hand on the patient’s chest. The physician then raises the patient’s head (with the hand behind the head) while the hand on the chest restrains the patient and
prevents the patient from rising. Flexion of the patient’s lower extremities (hips and knees) constitutes a positive sign. Brudzinski’s neck sign has more sensitivity
than Kernig’s sign

I kindly ask the moderators to make this a Sticky

two signs of infective endocarditis:

Osler nodules
Osler nodes are red-purple, slightly raised, tender lumps, often with a pale centre. Pain often precedes the development of the visible lesion by up to 24 hours. They are typically found on the fingers and/or toes. They can occur at any time during the course of endocarditis (usually subacute) and last from hours to several days.

Janeway's lesions
In contrast to Osler nodes, Janeway lesions are non-tender, often haemorrhagic (bleeding into the skin), and occur mostly on the palms and soles including the thenar and hypothenar eminences (at the base of the thumb and little finger respectively). They tend to last days to weeks before healing totally. They are more commonly seen in acute endocarditis, when bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus may be cultured from them. The histology is usually consistent with septic micro-embolism (i.e. bacteria may be found within the blood vessels).

Mallory bodies
eosinophilic structures found in the cytoplasm of patients with alcoholic hepatitis=ubiquinated karatin filaments

Councilman bodies
Until recently the presence of Councilman bodies in a liver biopsy was thought to be sufficient evidence for a diagnosis of yellow fever. However, they have since been found also to be present in other viral hemorrhagic fevers, and thus may no longer be considered as diagnostic for yellow fever. see here

Lewi bodies
eosinophilic structures found in the degenerated neurons from substantia nigra in patients with Parkinson's = ubiquinated neurofilaments

TROUSSEAU SIGN OF Malignancy Also Called Trousseau Syndrome
migratory thrombophlebitis in paraneoplastic syndrome (pancreas, colon, lung cancer)

HOMAN SIGN
pain in forced dorsiflexion of the foot: thrombophlebitis

Edited by new_n_lost on 04/01/07 - 08:11 PM

  #18

TROUSSEAU SIGN also is a sign of hypocalcemic tetany.
A blood pressure cuff is placed around the arm and inflated to a pressure greater than the systolic blood pressure and held in place for 3 minutes. If carpal spasm occurs, manifested as flexion at the wrist and metacarpophalangeal joints, extension of the distal interphalangeal and proximal interphalangeal joints, and adduction of the thumb and fingers, the sign is said to be positive and the patient likely has hypocalcemia. This sign may become positive before other gross manifestations of hypocalcemia such as hyperreflexia and tetany, but is generally believed to be less sensitive than the Chvostek sign for hypocalcemia.

Do not confuse with Trosseau´s syndrome whici is migratory thrombophlebitis seen in patients with pancreatic cancer and other types of tumors.
