From SGU. Failed step 1, got a 182 on the retake. And I just found out I failed step 2 for the 2nd time. LOL. I can't quit. This will always be the only thing I will ever wanna do. But I gotta be honest. I feel good in the hospital. Feel like I know what I'm doing. Feel like I belong there. Finishing up my 4th year and have good letters. Attendings, residents and students that I work with are usually surprized to hear bout my scores after they work with me. So thankfully, there are quite a few people that have confidence in my clinical and diagnostic skill. But this time I can't help question what kind of physician I can be if I can't pass these tests. Are there any openings in nursing school?

well!!its a dilemma but to get into the system,we need to pass these exams.I personally believe there is a lot more than just knowing your stuff attached to this exam.Coming from a different system, not being used to time pressure, not being used to the diseases common in this side of the world....many things matter that accumulate and become a reason for failures. In my opinion,we also lack strategy for right preparation when we fail. Here are a few points that might help. 1.All starts with self confidence.A thousand people sitting in a room, all will be doctors, but the one who knows how t answer a question well is considered vigilant. In the same room, there will be many doctors who also know the answer, but they are not confident enough of their knowledge or capabilities.Whether we know or we dont know,we must think and must have an opinion about things. Not always we will be right, but still try to be confident in what u think is correct, your abilities as a doctor. 2.Find a study partner.Mostly we study in a dark room with one table lamp on.We are reading the questions, theory again and again silently and nothing is actually going in our brain. When there are two or more people, your brain is active. There is a sence of alertness and competetion. You ask questions and u think about the possible answers. And obviusly u retain a lot. 3.Try to strengthen your basics.Even in step 2,if I dont know what amiloride is,where it is used, what are the side effects....I wont be able to even reach the middle part of the question.Like I am revising step 1 micro for infectious diseases as I feel without knowing how a bug will present as a disease,I cant reach the next level of "next best management?" 4.Talk to people and read their experiences.Try to follow the schedules 99 guys were following.Like always take nbme tests before u reach prometric.Dont worry about time.U are supposed to do good so be flexible with time for this exam. 5.Believe in one thing. We all make mistakes. Some have wasted time when they were in med school, some have wasted time after graduation, some have done stupid mistakes on exam....if everyone starts getting 99,who is going to get residency eventually? So In the end,u will get what you are destined to get.You can change your destiny with hard work, but if u try out everything and still things dont work out, leave it on fate.Gather all your courage and try one more time.If U r destined to get into residency, your 8 attempts wont matter in the end.So dont lose heart and be confident that there is nothing impossible and human will power can overcome any hurdle eventually.Loser is the person who suspects his own abilities to change his fate. Good luck and welcome to step 2 forum,IN A FRESH WAYlike u were born this moment.

I am a very good doctor (though not a very modest one ) and failed step 2 in 2003. I was born to be a doctor, wanted it since I was 5 years old, do not have talent to anything else (anything at all, except being a mother), and will not give up, untill my last breath in this life. I have thought about being a nurse, too... That, I gave up, very quick. These are two very different careers, with very different roles. If you are shaped to be a doctor, you won't be happy being a nurse, and vice-versa. Botton-end, being a doctor is a call, a mission, and you can not settle for anything else, if that's really what you want. Being a good test taker does not mean being a good professional, as well as not knowing about the second reaction in urea cycle does not make you a bad doctor. Beiing a good doctor means not only knowing the books, but having common sense, good interpersonal skills, compassion, empathy and trying to give your best for suffering people. Good luck to us all!

Robin, SGU is St. George U. in Grenada....unless there's another SGU somewhere in the US? I like #3 a lot MDcooper. I just took Step 1 a few months ago, and haven't really started studying for the Step2...yet i feel like i can answer most Step 2 questions just based on a solid knowledge of Step 1 material.

Thank MDcooper for giving me so great confidence! I have been struggling for making the final decision of taking the steps for a long time, but now it is the time to step out and make the detail plan. Ariete, I have the same story that I wanted to be a nurse, that is the reason why I was wandering between being a nurse and going back being a doctor. Yes, you are absolutely right that we are shaped to be a doctor, we wont be happy being a nurse. Also I admire your saying that you wouldnt give up untill the last breath in the life. I am so touched by you who has three kids, and must have a very very tight schedual to study. It is very inspiring to me! I am wondering how you can keep going on the study every day. Could you tell me how you can make and stick on the study every day? Thanks! I hope that you have a good luck and success for the next step!

Dear wyb: I had to be creative... Basically, between all the chores, I sat and wrote flash cards - used First Aid for step 1 and am using Kaplan Lecture Notes for step 2, and carried them wherever I went. I read them during swimming, karate, soccer classes, on doctor/dentist waiting rooms, even grocery store lines! Took me good 8 months to read all the material for step 1. During the last two months, I started memorizing what I felt was high yield (the information that I noticed was being repeated on the preparation sources), did Q-bank and usmleworld on-line. Then my husband and the daycare played "mom" to the kids. No weekends, holidays, no interruption, please! I intend to do the same for step 2, but this time I'll watch the Kaplan DVDs (I am already doing it, cross-stitching at the same time). My score for step 1 was 207/84, not impressive, but considering I graduated in 1992 and studied a lot about a very restricted area afterwards (arrhythmias, pacemakers ans ACDs), I am happy. Aiming higher for step 2, of course. If I did it, anyone can do it. Any person who graduates as a doctor has sufficient intellectual capacity to pass the test. One only has to get the right material to study. For some, like us, it's a struggle, because doctors tend to be perfeccionists, and want to be great parents. But it's about prioritizing and trying to be happy to have a happy family, too. NOT EASY, but what is?

may times in your life you will fall. you may make a carrier out of falling. however, it's the getting up after your fall that's most important. just stand tall and march toward your goals. all those falls you experienced along the way will make you a better person in the end. one who has never seen the bottom cannot truly appreciate the top.
