Hello Guys!

I am an IMG from Denmark, graduated from med school in Sweden in June 2005. The following are my qualifications.

Age: 29, married with a daughter.

Year of Grad: 2005, Interupted med school twice due to financial reasons.

6 months Research Experience in handsurgery fr Sweden, without any publications. No papers to varify it. Might be able to track down my supervisor and ask for a LoR.

Step 1 score: 262/99 first attempt
Step 2 CK score: 259/99 first attempt
Step 2 CS : Passed first attempt.

6 months of USCE in a university hospital in USA, from where I have 3 very strong LoRs.

No US citizenship or Green Card or any other Visa.

Residency of desire at a University or University affliated Hospital:
1. Orthopaedic Surgery
2. Vascular Surgery
3. Radiology
4. General Surgery

Applying for 2008. Not now cus I have just got my little daughter.

How competitive am I? Am I wanted as a resident with above qualifications? I am wondering which Residency I have best chance of getting and where should I concentrate my efforts.

Regards

Dr Goat you have great credentials....but for IM or FM......to compete in your desired fields (specially in orthopedics) you have to do much more than that, like 2-3 years of research in your desired area with good publications, a lot of networking during that time and VERY STRONG US letter of recommendation from faculty or attendings from your top choice, as well as some phone calls from your recommenders to the PDs.
I believe I am not missing anything.

i agree with faaa too. as u mentioned, u're gonna wait for 2008 anyway, so step3 gives u extra credentials, and enables u 2 get h1b visa, if u r interrested in.

as far as i know fields in which u r interrested r highly competitive, and they take mostly us graduates, however, u can try, and i think it's possible, not only for general surgery , which is more available relatively compared with ur other selected field. u can also do a preliminary year, but i dont have much idea about it

best luck
