A 30 yr old female comes to your office complaining of a vaginal discharge, dyspareunia and vulvar pruritis. On examination,u notice a thin bubbly and grayish discharge accompanied with erythema and swelling of the vulva and vaginal mucosa. The PH of the discharge is 6 and wet mount smear show pear shaped motile organisms.Metronidazole is prescribed for both the pt and the partner. Can u guess what is the organism they are talking about here?

Trichomonas is the answer here an increase in th ph of the vagina in women makes women more succeptible to infection, The predominant organism in the vagina Lactobacillus keeps the vagina slightly acidic and inhibit the growth of organisms but when the ph is increased the organisms grow. Tratment is metronidazole.
